Un-fecking-believable!
As some of you already know, my husband and I run an informal dog shelter here in Mexico. Currently we are caring for 20+ dogs, out of pocket. So far this year, we've had 2 neutered and 6 spayed. After a long recovery, two have just gone into heat! It turns out that the vet left an ovary in "a couple of them" -despite our explicit instructions beforehand. I am so frustrated and angry! Now we have to determine which (hopefully not all) of them will need another, more dangerous surgery to remove everything. Even if they are infertile, we can't have dogs going into heat. It is too upsetting to the pack.
We just reintegrated a pair of sisters that HATE each other when they are in heat (it wasn't easy, that aggression is difficult to correct) and thought that we wouldn't have to worry about that again. Now we don't know.
To complicate things further, we were due to have 7 puppies spayed this month -but have obviously lost all confidence in our vet. That means finding another vet (easier said than done) and at least another 2 weeks of playing 'don't have sex with your sister'.
*sigh* ok...just had to vent.
Man, that sucks. What was the vet's reason for leaving an ovary? Too much trouble to dig them out? Thought the hormones would do them some good? How frustrating!
Aw Savvy I'm so sorry. Want me to fly down there and kick that vet's a*$ for you?!! >:(
Oh my goodness! That is horrible Savvy! I hope you can find a better, more responsible vet! Any chance the other vet will give you back some of your money for the botch job????? How horrible to be providing this wonderful service and be taken by a doctor you thought was helping you! (((((((HUGS))))))
poor pups!
that's awful! good luck finding a new vet :(
Veggydog: A little of both... too difficult to get to and, because he thinks the hormones are good for them, he didn't think it was a big deal.
Thanks FF, Thanks, I'll let you know. ;)
I don't know why I'm surprised. Nothing ever goes smoothly here. I'm sure it will be ok eventually and we'll all learn a valuable lesson but right now it just sucks.
My first cat was about 23 years ago. I took her to be neutered and she came back with this HUGE incision, which made me think the vet gave some student an anatomy lesson while he was in there. BUT he didn't remove her ovaries, just tied her tubes!! So she went into heat anyway.
Some of them think (erroneously) that animals will get cancer if neutered. Others anthropomorphise too much, and project their own emotional reaction to neutering on the animal. ("Why don't you just have him put to sleep if you're going to do that!")
At that time, regarding specifically cat medicine, other vets in this area were just stupid, inept or dishonest. I was told at that time that cats "don't need a rabies vaccine because they can't get it." Oh really! I know all about the vaccine debate, but don't sit there and tell me that cats can't get rabies!
Since then, fortunately, things have improved somewhat but you still have to be careful which vet you get for feline care...since then I've decided to have male cats only because it is visually evident if they've been properly neutered or not.
