ikea is a cult

i went to that place today for the first time with my mom... SCARY! from the second you walk in the door everyone is herded up the stairs into the first area and they built it so that you can only go one way to get out. it was so creepy. i was joking around saying the different ways they can trap you, like by not allowing your cell phone to have signal (which happened to me!) but i kind of believed it. haha. but we got out alive, so it's all good. hahaha

and plus, i went to whole foods today and got some AMAZING  rice ice cream, mud pie flavor, so im on cloud 9 right now.  :)>>>

ikea is stressful.  i cant go in there.

We don't have one in our city, but at some point they were talking about opening one. But I don't know... Everytime we go to Montreal for union meetings, we always have a bunch of women who want to spend their spare time at IKEA... it's insane!!!!!

I like Ikea for some things.  The trick is to figure out where the employee holes are cut.  There are shortcuts throughout the store that allow you to avoid the maze.  Still, I can only go there when I'm in an exceptionally calm mood and even then, by the time I'm done, I knocking over kids to get out of there with haste.

I went to our Ikea once--I liked all the mini rooms they decorated and set up wth furnature and it gave me lots of ideas and made me want t obuy all that cheap crap--but then I realized I would have to buy it all in order to make it look as cool as they did...that place is defintely a trap, a cult and a money pit!

They do have some cute little things though don't they?

Oh! Rice cream! NOM! I'm totally jelly!

IKEA!!!!  :D

A lot of people go there just for lunch because it's unexpensive and good...
I also know some spending the whole day there... I did that to...  ??? ::) But not anymore  ::)

Germany has the most number of Ikea in Europe. Almost each bigger city/town has one.

I learned where the entrance to the little supermarket thing is, and go in and out through there. I don't go there that often, anyway...particularly since unless you drive a van/SUV, getting someone to deliver your stuff costs more than the stuff.

Having said that, we bought a table and a computer chair through them once that are still going strong nearly 10 years later. Their armchairs and sofas are comfortable, but can you say ugly?  ;D

Someone in the UK came out with a single a few years back called "I hate IKEA."

They have great bookcases.  Great prices.  Simple and basic.  I once had a snobby relative say IKEA looks so IKEA (as in cheap).  F*ck her.  We don't all crave gloppy, ornate and expensive beyond words sh*t.  As I need new bookcases (floor to ceiling), I will be going to IKEA in the next few weeks.  I love walking through the market place.  Only go about every two years but none the less, a fun excursion.  Have found more than a few treasures over the years.

I have a love / hate thing going on with Ikea.  I usually hate going bcause it's so so so busy, but I also love all the kitchen gadgets and pans and cutlery....I get so excited by it all, it's so sad!

I like the stuff, and I like that it's less expensive, but I hate putting it together.

The prices make most things accessible which is a plus for some things, but at the same time for larger items you have to remember that you need to do the assembling and the quality is not top-notch, as in lots of 'wood' furniture is particle-wood, not solid wood... but the big downer for me is having to put stuff together myself, or trying to get a friend to do it, etc.... However, for accessories, kitchen-y stuff, etc... I think it's okay.

My mum and I are fans of IKEA. I just moved out of my parents' house and my desk and chair are from IKEA. They look fairly smart and basic, the chair is comfortable and it's cheap. We go there when I'm staying with the folks but we go late at night when there are no screaming kids and the cafe is empty: she has the meatballs, a pot of tea and a marzipan cake, I have pasta, hot chocolate and fruit. We fuel up then wander around the cookware department and buy bright red and black rubber gloves and dish brushes with suction cups on... I think getting out the house has stopped her murdering my dad so I can deal with fiddly flatpack construction and bizarre mazes  ;D

If Ikea is a cult then I'm a follower... :o

It's an awesome place to take babies and kids... (mid week not on a weekend, then its too busy) My boys love the ball room and once they're all tired out, I take them up to the cafeteria... the food isn't all that great but they have an great view of the highway and train tracks and my boys can spend a good hour, munching fries while watching all the cars, truck and trains roll by.

Although you know you've got to much stuff from Ikea when you 4 year olds can open the box, find the tools and assemble the item themselves...

I haven't been to an Ikea store.  Actually, my parents gave me $300 for christmas to go to Ikea and get a dining room table.  Instead, I took a free table with two broken chairs and spent $300 stocking up on groceries at the organic market in Frederick.  ::)

I like their style - but having never seen any of their items in person I can't say what the quality is like.

mdv that's awesome!!! yay for free (and craigslist!) furniture!!!

funny, my mom and I were just talking about ikea as we were driving back to boston tonight. we passed by one and I mentioned that they're going to open one up in somerville soon but I've never been to one.  she said she went with my sister once because they were at a museum and asked someone where they could eat nearby and the person said ikea. my mom thought the food was awful and overpriced and she was overwhelmed by the chemical smell of the whole place.  she said she gave the experience 0 stars. aww. lol.

I went there ONCE & never again! We managed to come out with a couch & it was fun to put together & still looks nice, but ohmyosh- dealing with that store is insane! I really don't see the attraction. The whole system for buying furniture there is so bizarre!

But I also dislike all shopping and am I'm also freaked out in large grocery stores, so yeah, its probably just me.

For real.  I love Ikea, but I can't stand all of the people in there.

We got our desk and bedroom set from IKEA.  We go during the day during the week so it isn't that crowded, though I never realized until this thread why I walked out of there so exhausted.  It was just trying to figure out where everything was and how to find it on the shelves. >:(  I couldn't go all the time, but I do like to go and wander through once in awhile.

Did anyone see the IKEA commerical they had for their sale recently?

the only wayto shop there is to get the catalog, pick out what you want and and then go to the store.  Unless you have tons of time on your hands, it's too confusing.  I always joke that it's bigger than the town I grew up in.  I love alot of their stuff, but I am terrible about putting things together.

I hear ya on that one.  I love IKEA!  I order the catalogue every year.  It gives me lots of ideas for my home, especially the kids rooms and the kitchen.  It is overwelming when its crowded.  I went once during boxing day, and I walked right out.  The line ups were insane!  :o  I never go there without an idea of what I am looking for. But I love the place.  :)>>>
