Boca-esque Burger Mix
1 cup TVP (textured vegetable protein)
3 tablespoons vital wheat gluten
3 tablespoons flour
2 tablespoons vegan dry onion soup mix
2 teaspoons dark sesame oil
1 cup boiling water
1. Mix together all ingredients except water. At this point, the mix may be stored for future use, or used immediately.
2. To use, mix in the boiling water, allow to stand about 10 minutes.
3. Form into 4 patties, and cook thoroughly in oiled or sprayed nonstick pan.
Source of recipe: I wrote this recipe. I've been experimenting to create a substitiute for Boca burgers. I love them, but they're way too expensive, and if I buy at the warehouse club to save money, they take too much room in the freezer. These aren't identical, but similar enough to make me happy. They can be stored in the pantry, and are even suitable for travel or camping.
SO HOW'D IT GO?
One other point to mention, if you are avoiding this recipe because of the gluten, please note that gluten is only a health concern if you are the less than 5% of the population with a gluten sensitivity.

If you are part of that 5%, by all means, do not make this recipe with the vital wheat gluten.
I am surprised to be the first one commenting on this recipe because not only is it delicious, but the burgers physically look like Boca Burgers and shape very easily. The flavor isn't exactly the same but browns to a very pleasing texture. I followed the recipe exactly this time but am curious to add a drop or two of liquid smoke to the next batch. It made 4 large patties and I imagine popping the cooked patties in the toaster would be nice to heat up leftovers. My personal rating is 5/5 stars for texture, flavor, speediness to prepare, and minimal ingredients. Thank you so much for this recipe!
I will for sure try this, it looks very simple.
