Craving-Cure Cookies

What you need:

1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1/4 cup dry sweetener of choice
1/3 cup apple sauce
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups quick cooking oats
3/4 cup carob chips (or raisins, or something else you like)

What you do:

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. In a large bowl, mix sugars, apple sauce and vanilla.
2. In another bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, baking powder and salt, then stir into the wet mixture.
3. Add the oats and then the carob chips. Drop rounded teaspoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes.
Once you add the oats and chips it gets very thick, so you can always add a bit more apple sauce or some water to get it to a better consistency. (I usually don't have to do this). They come out nice and soft! Usually makes about 20-24 cookies depending on how big I make them. Enjoy.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

MADE THESE AGAIN TODAY-USED 3/4 CUP OF BROWN SUGAR, ALL WHOLE WHEAT FLOUR,VANILLA AND LEMON EXTRACT, WALNUT PIECES, DRIED CRANBERRIES, AND SHREDDED SWEETENED COCONUT. THE BATTER IS TASTY-CAN'T WAIT TO TRY THE COOKIES. MY 15 YR OLD ATE MOST OF THE FIRST POSTED BATCH ANDF HE'S NOT A VEGAN BY ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE RECIPE, IT'S SO SIMPLE THAT IT ALLOWS YOU TO BE CREATIVE.

Thank you for the quick and tasty recipe. I used half whole wheat and all purpose flour, followed the directions, but added walnut pieces, vegan chocolate chips and shredded coconut. I also had to add more applesauce just because I thought the batter was a little dry. Overall very good, it satisfied my cravings. I think next time I will use a little more applesauce or some soy milk, I would have liked them to be moister in the middle. Oh yeah, I used 3/4 cup brown sugar. Thanks again, my 8 yr old enjoys licking the spoons and the bowel afterwards. One of the joys of vegan cooking. ;)

cocoa butter is actually vegan, or so I've heard.

well, I made these again the other night when I was craving chocolate...this was the first recipe that came to mind, go figure.  They were delicious, but even having followed the recipe exactly, they turned out a bit drier than they did last time, when I made a cinnamon/spice batch.  hmph.  I think this recipe is just really particular when it comes to baking time....I tend to make my cookies pretty small, so 8 minutes might have actually been just one minute too long.

Oh, and you know how some food labels have that "summary" at the end of the ingredient list, like Contains: soy, wheat, milk...etc.?  and usually, they'll indicate that there's milk in it even if it's the tiniest, most far-removed bit of dairy, like casein or some such.  Somehow THIS particular bag of semisweet chips only said Contains: soy.  My eyes scanned the ingredient list, and cocoa butter and butteroil were right next to each other, and I didn't even notice until I'd already made the cookies!!
>:(

So beware of butteroil!
/end rant.

To sum up:  this is a great, easy recipe for an all-purpose oatmeal cookie that can accommodate pretty much any mix-in you could possibly crave.  just don't overbake if you like them soft and chewy.

Yum! I also used a flax egg like one of the previous posters mentioned. This made the batter really dry though so I added some soymilk. They are delicious!  ;D

i know i already left a review but i have to say... u should call these crave-causing cookies.. the only reason i stopped eating them was because they were all gone! i'm trying to keep myself from making more. even my parents and boyfriend liked them, and they rarely even try the veg things i make

These cookies were sooo delicious. I used all brown sugar and added chopped walnuts, I can only imagine how good they are with carob chips! Very easy to make, will definitely make again! ;)

i really like this. after having a kashi oatmeal chocolate chip cookie i'd been looking for a similar recipe. this was perfect, especially since it came out tasting like my mom's (nestle) chocolate chip cookies but kinda crunchier because of the oats, but when u get a chocolate chip it tastes just the same.

i didn't put any cinnamon in because i dont like cinnamon in my choc chip cookies.and i used 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup splenda, for the flour i used whole wheat and whole wheat pastry flour, cut the chocolate chips down to 1/2 cup. next time i might not put a whole 1/2 cup in cuz it seemed a lot.

if i'd known they weren't going to spread i would've shaped them. next time :) and i only got 12 small-ish cookies out of it. probably wouldve been bigger if i'd flattened them. thanks!!!
