General Tao's Tofu

What you need:

1 (12 ounce) box firm tofu, in 1" cubes (frozen and thawed, if desired)
1 egg equivalent (e.g., EnerG Egg Replacer), prepared
3 tablespoons + 2 tablespoons water, divided
3/4 cup + 1 tablespoon cornstarch, divided
vegetable oil for frying + 3 tablespoons vegetable oil, divided
3 green onions, chopped
1 tablespoon minced ginger
1 tablespoon minced garlic
2/3 cup vegetable stock
1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 tablespoon sherry, optional
red pepper, to taste
steamed broccoli, to serve

What you do:

1. Mix the egg replacer as specified on the box and add an additional 3 tablespoons water. Dip tofu in egg replacer mixture and coat completely. Sprinkle 3/4 cup cornstarch over tofu and coat completely. Watch out that the cornstarch doesn't clump up at the bottom of the bowl.
2. Heat oil in pan and fry tofu pieces until golden. Drain oil. Heat 3 tablespoons vegetable oil in pan on medium heat. Add green onions, ginger, and garlic; cook for about 2 minutes. Be careful not to burn garlic.
3. Add vegetable stock, sugar, soy sauce, vinegar, sherry, and red pepper.
4. Mix 2 tablespoons water with 1 tablespoon cornstarch and pour into mixture stirring well. Add fried tofu and coat evenly.
Serve immediately with steamed broccoli over your choice of rice.

This is the first recipe we have tried from this site and it is fabulous!  I was delighted the flavors were just like chicken!!  I loved General Tso's!  I didn't have broccoli and really think it needed it as the crunch from steamed broccoli would have been a good compliment to the soft tofu.  Peanuts would have been good too but hubby doesn't like peanuts!
Thanks for the recipe!!!!!!!!!! :D

This was the first recipe I tried to make from this website, I knew I had to try it after all of the awesome reviews. Boy, everyone wasn't kidding, the sauce is just the best part! I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to cooking so this took me a little longer than the listed prep time but well worth it. I didn't have cornstarch so I used a measurement converter I found online to use flour instead. Flour clumps a whole lot but, I managed to get it to work! Instead of broccoli I used peas and mushrooms over rice with steamed carrots, came out absolutely yummy. Great recipe, thanks bundles for sharing :)

OMG, I am making this right now, just tasted the sauce by sticking my finger in the pan, it is AMAZING!  I will most definitely be making this again, I took everyones advice and doubled the sauce, and I added about 2 tsp of onion powder as I only have sweet onions which I used too.  I also used rice vinegar instead of regular, Crazy good!  :D

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME
My husband is not very fond of Tofu or anything that isn't "real" meat. But he actually liked it and said as long as it taste this good he could do without meat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 4 children also loved it and I also doubled the sauce great tip..... Thank you

Oh my goodness. This was SOOO good. :D The first time I made it, I forgot to add the vegetable stock, but it still turned out wonderfully. The second time I made it, I added the stock, but I had to add a lot more cornstarch to thicken it up. I think I'll just stick with not adding the stock. This is probably one of the few... or maybe the only vegetarian dish that my mom likes. I want some right now. <drools> Next time I will try baking the tofu. Or maybe I'll add some Morningstar Farms Chik'n Strips like someone else on here did. Or maybe I'll just add a bunch of vegetables. This was pretty easy to prepare. I usually have most of the ingredients on hand. So delicious! Thanks for the recipe!!

Yum recipe!
Make it with seitan to please meat eaters. Just don't burn the seitan like I did!
And, duh! Double the sauce! Oh, and throw in veggies. I used broc and green pepper. Not the healthiest meal, but damn is it good!

Double the sauce. Stir-fry red bell peppers  and broccoli in a pan, add tofu when done and then pour the sauce in there. Serve over rice. Yumm. The tofu-breading process really makes this taste like restaurant food if you're willing to take the time to do it.

I use my version of this sauce all the time. I cook some ginger and garlic, then add some combo of soy sauce, mirin, rice vinegar, veggie stock, and something sweet like sugar or agave or brown rice syrup. Blend cornstarch with water, then pour it in the sauce and it thickens up nicely. I don't ever bother with the green onions.

I like to make a single-serving amount of this sauce and pour it over stir-fried rice n veggies. Beware if you make extra and put it in the fridge it thickens up into a jelly-like consistency.
