Pomegranate-Balsamic Grilled Tempeh
1 package tempeh
1/ 2 cup balsamic vinegar, for marinating
1/4 cup teriyaki or soy sauce, for marinating
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar, for sauce
1/4 cup pomegranate molasses, for sauce
Slice the tempeh into small strips. Combine the 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar and 1/4 cup teriyaki or soy sauce in a small bowl, and add the tempeh to marinate for at least an hour.
When the tempeh is almost finished marinating, heat the grill to high. Combine the 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar and 1/4 cup pomegranate molasses in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir often until the mixture is warm.
When the tempeh has absorbed the marinade, grill the tempeh on each side, approximately 2-3 minutes per side.
Serve the tempeh hot, and drizzle with the warm sauce. This is great paired up with sauteed greens!!
SO HOW'D IT GO?
I tried this and had some mixed feelings...there was a little too much of a soy sauce taste for my liking, even though I thought the vinegar would win out over everything. It was an interesting blend between the sweet of the pomegranate and and the sour of the vinegar....but I think I would change some of the proportions for my own tastes. Definitely an interesting recipe and something I look forward to experimenting with again in the future!
I just want to add this link for those that can't locate pomegranate molasses. Here's a recipe for pomegranate syrup/molasses from the Food Network:

I have had this recipe saved for at LEAST a couple of months while keeping an eye out for pomegranate molasses. Finally, I found some in a Middle Eastern market/café in my city.
I just made it tonight, and it was totally worth the wait. Delicious and ridiculously easy to prepare. I served it with a side of sautéed spinach and roasted red peppers with a bit of the balsamic vinegar to flavor it.
Great job!
interesting...
rhengirl: You are welcome! I'm so glad you like it!
TinTexas: Pomegranate molasses is nothing more than reduced pomegranate juice. It's reduced until it is thick, like molasses. You can pick it up at most international markets. Yes, it is slightly sweet. But with the balsamic vinegar, the acidity cuts the sweetness. It's nothing like eating a dessert! But you should give it a try anyway! It took a while for me to get into sweet-savory combinations, but this is really more savory than anything.
I've never heard of pomegranate molasses before. Is it something you buy at an Oriental grocery or make from a recipe? Is it very sweet? I don't like non-dessert dishes that are really sweet. The recipe seems a bit strange to me but if it's not sweet and I could get the pomegranate molasses, I'd try it. :)
i cant believe no one has reviewed this recipe! i make this at least twice a month. this by far my favorite way to eat Tempeh.thank you so much for posting this.
