What you need:

baking soda and/or sea salt, as needed

What you do:

1. Wet toothbrush.
2. Put a bit of soda and/or salt in your palm and dip the brush in.
3. Brush. Repeat as necessary.
The sea salt is less drying than table salt, but no matter what you use, it's good to rinse well afterwards.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

YOU MIGHT ADD SOME MYRRH IF YOU CAN GET SOME THAT CAN BE CONSUMED AND NOT JUST FOR TOPICAL SKIN APPLICATION.    THAT HAS BEEN USED SINCE BCE. SOME OF THE TOOTHPASTES IN HEALTH FOOD STORES USE THIS AS AN INGREDIENT.

I like using baking soda with turmeric (VERY little or you'll be orange :p) since i dont have the best teeth or genetics in this department. Really helps with gum irritations and inflamation, the taste may not be for everyone (kind of earth and al ittle spicy) but it doesnt bother me. And lindserina what agreta idea i totally know what im going to pick up some seeds for when i hit the garden store!

Baking soda=pure magic.

I'm glad to find a toothpaste "recipe" that shows only what you really need, not a bunch of ingredients that are going to make the toothpaste cost drastically more than it should.

Question: I have a lot of spearmint growing in my yard. What is the best way to incorporate that flavor into this toothpaste?

Thanks for the info on Toms of Maine!

QUESTION: can I use mouthwash afterward or will this be counterproductive with the baking soda? I just like to have minty breath! ha

i used baking soda mixed with sea salt, and added a bit of crushed mint (i actually found some chocolate flavored mint that my mom used to grow in her garden...YUM!) i've been kind of unhappy with commercial toothpastes and never really felt like my teeth were getting clean, so i'm really glad to make this switch. i love the way my mouth feels now! :) and um, baking soda is way cheap. hooray!

How do you mix the mint in?

toms of maine has baking soda in it, though i heard they were bought by colgate and that we cant use their products any more cuz the parent company tests.

Ive read some recipes and it says to put flouride in it (?)  I just wonder where you would find some of that

The taste is something that takes getting used to, but this works really well!  My teeth are heaps whiter than they were before I started doing this (I use bicarbonate of soda), but you really do need to rinse.  I just keep a small jar of bicarb in the bathroom and dip my wet toothbrush straight into the jar (I don't fill the jar up much, so it ends up being emptied and washed every few days).  Been doing it for about a month.

I've been using straight baking soda to brush my teeth for over 6 months now. I went in for a dentist appointment a few weeks after I switched from commercial toothpaste to baking soda and my dentist said my teeth were great. I'm about due for another appointment, if I remember I will let you know how the check-up went. So far in my life, I've never had a cavity. ::knocks on wood::

The taste might take a little getting used to, but it's the best deodorizer and cleaner I've found, and leaves my mouth feeling great, with no residue left over.

I had never thought to do this, and I took a look on the baking soda's box, it even mentioned it. Glad you posted this, I wouldn't have thought to do this. My Teeth do feel much cleaner now.

I'm surprised my grandmother never mentioned this. She would put baking soda paste on a bee sting, she was all about the stuff.
