Roll Call!
Edit. The following intro is a bit old. I unfortunately ended my long term relationship after nearly ten years. Just couldn't be worked out. I got the house and the dogs and am relatively happy now. I finished my online RN to BSN program and am a genuine college graduate at the age of 48!!! Woot!
Edit #2 - I finally reached the ripe old age of 50 and am feeling fabulous! I always get the "you don't look 50" thing, and I attribute that to a healthy diet and lifestyle.
I deleted my Myspace page. I do have Facebook and love to have vegwebbers for friends. You can private message me and I'll give you my name. Or you can find me on the vegweb fan page.
Edit #3 - Finally went vegan. The last couple of years, I've been slowly getting there, replacing household and personal products with vegan items such as vegan soaps, candles, cleaners. I've bought vegan shoes, belts and wallets. I'm loving it! Decided to let my hair go naturally grey instead of coloring it so I don't get the "you don't look 50" thing as much anymore. LOL I now have a desk job in the admit-transfer center and hate it hate it hate. I just can't be stuck behind a desk, and I'm the lookout for something else.
Edit #4 - Found a position at the hospital I currnetly work on an ortho floor. I think I'll like returning to the bedside and not a desk job. w00t
It's been a while and I thought it might be nice to for everyone who posts here to tell a little about yourself. I took a little sabbatical from this site (went back to eating meat for two years..........bleech), but lurked from time to time, but have been a part of this site for gee, can it be 8 or more years???? But I don't know a lot of you.
I am a nurse. I am a male. (yes, a person who will remain nameless called me a "she".) I am gay. I've been in a monogamous relationship for the last nine years with a great guy who now travels a lot. I was an ovo-lacto veg*n for about 12 years before slipping, I plead insanity.
I'm currently in an online program to go from an ADN RN to BSN RN and hope to finally graduate from college at the age of 48 next year.
I have a very boring blog here: http://allnurses.com/forums/journal.php?do=showjournal&j=13
You're turn. Tell me your business!
Hello!!
My name is Jennifer. I am 25, my husband is 30 and we have a 2 year old son. We have never met a vegetable that we didn't like. I follow my diet for primarily for health. Though economic reasons are very important to me... I truly believe that each dollar I spend is like a little voter.
I became a non-meat eater in 1999(?) after a few short stints on and off meat when I was in highschool, finally, realizing that being a veg*n took more effort than grilled cheese sandwiches...
Our son is allergic to eggs and dairy. Though I'm not a big dairy eater anyway, researched a bit and decided we didn't need to eat those things either.
I'm originally from Los Angeles but have live all over the world. (IMO Russia = hardest to be veg in) I always miss the health food/veg convenience in Los Angeles. We live in Germany right now. I'm currently on the lookout for nutritional yeast flakes... but I'm guessing I'll be buying that online... adding it to the list...
I love to read. I love to and cook.... and experiment!
Hi all :) My name is Alanna & I'm from the Niagara Peninsula in southern Ontario. I'm lovin' reading where everyone is from & where you've been....some well seasoned travellers here. I'm jealous ;)
I'm soon to be 46 (another 1960 baby ;)) Hubby & I have been together for 19 years, we just haven't had the ceremony yet ;D We have a 16 year old son who was the catalyst in our decision to become vegan. We also have a goofy Shep/Lab dog & the sweetest cat I've ever known that are more like children to us than pets.
None of us were ever big fans of meat, so making the change for us wasn't all that hard....I do miss cheese though.
Originally, we became vegan for health reasons & I've learned a lot about the treatment of animals since. I never gave much thought to where our food came from before so I'm grateful for the awareness.
I love to cook & this site is such a godsend! I check here every day to see new recipes & love trying them out. Our food has never been so flavourful & I feel good knowing that nothing was hurt for us to enjoy our meals :)
It's great to meet you all.
Hi, I'm new to VegWeb as of Oct 1! I've been lurking for 4 years but didn't feel courageous enough to login as a user until I made "the move" to vegetarianism (and eventually veganism).
My name is Shelley. I'm 31 and live in NC. I work for a sustainable ag non-profit, and have studied agriculture for 3 years. I grew up with a vegetarian and have always felt that a plant-based diet is the right way to live. My dad's been a vegetarian for 32 years.
My boyfriend and I are very active. I've always been reluctant to stop eating meat because I exercise so much but recently I came across the Organic Athlete website (www.organicathlete.org). It's chock-full of facts about being a vegan athlete, including profiles of pro athletes that are vegan. I was sold and made the decision to finally do it!
nice to meet all of you!
WOW great website thanks Shelly!!! My husband will love it!
Well, how to sum up my life in a couple of paragraphs.....
I suspect I am the oldest person posting here on Vegweb.
(I am 55.)
I was born in Boston and have always lived in Massachussetts.
(My parents moved to the suburbs when I was 5 years old.)
I currently live in an area of the Boston suburbs called
"MetroWest"
I have been a vegetarian since 1991 and been vegan since 2001.
In the mid '90s I got interested in Macrobiotics and have been
infulenced by that type of food, but am not strict about it.
I am more interested in health eating than animal rights, but
think industrial farming is terrible. When food is in season
locally, I like to buy food from farm stands.
I work as a software engineer and have many different projects.
I am mostly involved with communication systems and other 'real-time'
type stuff. As hobbies, I like to cook, play guitar and (more so in the
past) done some photography and art type stuff.
I like to go for a walk almost every day and like to shovel snow.
Update: (January 5th, 2007)
I haven't been on this site for some time but an back. I'm still a vegan
and have kept up with my health food thing, just haven't had been
doing the posting thing for a while. I'm hoping to be a little more active
at this site.
Hey everyone, nice to meet ya!
I've been a vegweb member since.. oh i don't know. whenever i went vegan probably three years ago. i've never posted on the board though because i didn't know there was one until a few weeks ago when i posted about the vegan diabetic cake debacle. As you can see, I'm very observant!
So, my name is m.e. I'm 24, and I'm a reading specialist in Philadelphia. We just moved here in May from Atlanta. I am currently living with one fabulous kitty named Misfit and one future husband (getting his MFA in painting and drawing). i bike ride, teach kids how to read, and like to go to shows and goth nights (: I hope to discontinue my job soon and go back to school to eventually go to med school and become a medical doctor.
I became vegan for what seems like a THOUSAND reasons. I had a brief stint of vegetarianism in middle school, but then in college was when I went full on vegan and haven't looked back. It was a result of weekly arguments with my vegan flatmate. and after about three months of discussion, i thought "oh crap, she's right. I cannot argue anymore." So I went veggie for about a month, and it accidentally morphed into veganism. I did it for mostly humane and environmental reasons. Recently I'm starting to question veggie fed, free roaming chicken eggs, but never milk, and never any other eggs. Who knows what I will decide on that. Glad to meet ya!
Hello!
I am pretty new to this site although i have been a veggie for years but am finally in my own place and have control over the kitchen so am cooking to my hearts content and feeding my boyf with yummy food from the recipes I am finding here.
It's nice to hear about other vegeterians/vegans out there and getting hints and tips - I actually live in Northern Ireland so conversions for me to get the correct measures can be a wee bit confusing sometimes but it usually works out ok. I work in enviornmental protection and am studying a masters in conservation part time as well as working full time. My first degree was in Zoology and I have worked in conservation projects abroad as well so am trying to get more qualifications because 1 degree is never enough now! So I am pretty busy so full on cooking is normally at the weekend only.
Aside from cooking new things and constantly being on this website I love to get outdoors when I can and get out in the mountains for a walk, I love to box as well (good to get rid of stress) and have started tai chi yoga, which is quite good fun as well. I am also mad about music and am constantly going to gigs and checking out new bands and going for a pint (it's the Irish you know).
So thats it in a nutshell but it was good to hear about other people..............and in case you are wondering veda is like a savoury malted bread here which is amazing toasted and the 1st thing I crave when I have been away for a while.x
Hi, my name's Kristina, I'm 22 and I live in the bay area (around San Francisco)- right across the golden gate actually. I found this site a couple weeks ago when I went on a three hour hike and decided to make vegan fettuccini alfredo, and I liked it so much I decided to become a vegan. (I've flirted with the idea for many years, but didn't have the knowledge or the willpower).
I work at a herbal pharmacy/regular pharmacy/natural foods/natural make-up type store in San Rafael, and I love it. I am working on my biology major at SF State so I can later apply to naturopathic medicine school in Oregon.
I'm turning vegan purely based on how it makes me feel- aka very good- although I respect people who do it for political reasons.
That's all.
:)
Kristina
i'm bb, i used to post on here all the time but ive been lurking for a while now, not sure why i stopped posting! I live in london, uk, work part time in a book shop and study the rest of the time. have beenvegan for a few years now and veggie before that. thats about all i can think of right now!

Hi, I'm Maureen, married with two teenagers. I was a lacto-ovo before I became pregnant the first time, and went back to it b/c of my now 13-yo son who is vegan. My husband is vegan now, too, (the kid is VERY persuasive) and I am mostly vegan but some cheese. My 17 yo eats fish. But not at home. I'm an RN and I LOVE the meal planner/grocery list feature on this site. Enjoying reading your posts!
Hi all! I'm a 29 year old who has had dietary issues for many years. I have been lactose intolerant for approx 19 years, and I found out I have celiac disease 5 years ago (I can't eat gluten, a proteing found in wheat, oats, rye, and barley). I have been vegetarian for about a month. On Thanksgiving (Canadian) my Mom made a big deal about me not wanting to eat chicken. I didn't want to eat it because I wasn't sure the seasonings were gluten free. She rolled her eyes like I was "just being difficult", so I took the smallest little slice of chicken I could. Hours later I was very sick. Hence my now strong aversion to meat.
I had been an omnivore my whole life. I was raised on a farm with cows, pigs, chickens, and at one point pheasants. I love animals, but didn't really think of farm animals as animals. I thought of them as food.
Over the past few years I've been learning more about nutrition, as with the food intolerances I've had little choice. I found that when I stopped eating processed foods my eczema got better, and when I fell off the wagon it got worse. I've been buying organic fruits and veggies from a local organic co-op, so deleting meat from my diet has seemed like a natural progression. I'm working on cutting out cheese, and eggs are already gone.
Anyway, (I tend to go on...) my reasons for going veggie are mostly in regards to my health. I feel better than I have in a long time. Also, I feel good about NOT supporting factory farming and all that. I went to the PITA website, and that has encouraged me to stay veggie. I'm going to try to eat a vegan diet, but my priority has to be the lactose/gluten free diet, as not following that one can have serious consequences for my health.
As for personal stuff....I'm an ER Nurse who also works casual at an abortion clinic. I'm also a part time student in pre-med studies. I live with my partner of 7 years Scott and our 2 cats Simba and Frank. Hopefully kids and a house will happen at some point, who knows when.
I'm the freaky feminist/hippie middle child in my family, and have stopped encouraging them to be more environmentally friendly, because they ignore me anyway. But, I can only live my life. I can't live theirs.
Hi all,
My name's Jason. I'm from southern California. I'm 26, been a vegetarian for 13 years. I came across the site looking for a recipe, and am quite enamored now. I'm into art mainly, and of course animals. They rule. Spend my days in front of a computer designing web sites and print material. Trying to get my ass into art school before I turn 30.
I'm really hoping to make some friends here. :)

Konnichiwa!
Hi, I am Ganymede. I am a 20 year old twin. I was lacto-ova for about 1.5 years and now I am trying to cut out those eggs and dairy.
I am a culinary arts student in my first semester at a local college. I live in South-western PA. So, meat and taters here.
What made vegetarianism so appealing is the low cholesterol and the lack of bad stuff in the food. I was born with a rare heart disorder and I think this diet is a good step in the right direction.
When I went vegetarian, I dropped about 30 pounds the first year. Thats how much healthier I was eating. It made me realize that I coul be a healthy weight and I could CONTROL that weight with my healthy diet. Instead of a hamburger I was eating roasted mushrooms with barley pilaf and bbq tofu sandwiches on lite whole wheat bread. *drools*
I enjoy being a vegetarian so much, I will never go back to being an omnivore. I feel and look better than I have in a long time. When I am depressed I eat, but instead of chips or ice cream, its carrots and tofu dill dip that I make myself.
I enjoy singing and I am teaching myself Japanese. I hope I can someday take actually language classes, if I can find a place that they offer it. My favorite music is from the Hello! Project. I always was a pop music fan.
My sister is a off and on vegetarian. She eats mostly what I make, but if she has a bit of money, she'll get some chick fil'a. Atleast she eats a bit better than before.
I have a cat named Rascal, her mother got hit by a car about 5 years ago, and she walked up to me meowing in the cold. So, of course I had to take her in and make her happy. She is now a chubby kitty that enjoys cuddling with me and chasing the other cats in the house. Due to cold weather, she now resides near the heat registers in the house.
I love Vegweb.com very much. It's a wonderful site to be apart of. I use the site like my personal recipe box for great meal ideas. Its also a great way to get basic recipes and tweak them into my own creations. Thank you!
Hi! I am a 43 year old, can't believe I am sooooo old already :o! I have been a vegetarian for over 20 years now and am trying to go vegan. My reason for becoming a vegetarian were animals, health secondary.... will be a veggie for life. I am from Germany, but have lived in the US now for 14 years with my husband of 22 years. Currently we live in MD, but we are trying to sell our house and move to MA.
We are child free by choice and have 3 kitties living with us. I love this website, so many great recipes and a way to exchange tips and info with other veggies.
i'm bringing this up again for new visitors.
Well, how to sum up my life in a couple of paragraphs.....
I suspect I am the oldest person posting here on Vegweb.
(I am 55.)
Well, BradTheVegan, I hate to steal your thunder but I've got you beat by 7 years! :) As I said in my profile, I think I may be the VegWeb grandma. I would love to know if there are any other, um, very mature VegWeb members out there.
I think my profile pretty much sums me up without my having to write an epistle about myself (which is always fun for me but undoubtedly not so much fun for the reader).
The thing I'd like to say, though, is how impressed I have been with how knowledgeable all you young folk ( :)) are and how articulate. I work in a public library and I must say on a daily basis I encounter people who are so much less so. I'm learning a lot from you guys. And your thoughtful and sensitive responses to people who ask for help are wonderful and inspiring.
I'm loving being a VegWebber! :)
Hi! My name is Aimee. I live in the Sacramento area. Right now I am a math teacher, which I love. I was vegetarian in high school, then I went back to eating meat for many years. I've been a lurker here for a while, and this site was instrumental in my choice to go vegan on my 30th birthday this August. So far, so good. I have gotten a lot of support from my family. My husband is now almost completely vegan too, as I am the primary cook at home and he happily eats what I make-- I love that about him! I am vegan for pretty much every reason there is: animal rights, human biology, health, the environment, economics, and my own personal religious beliefs. I am obsessed with cooking; I even read cookbooks in bed as I am going to sleep! There are so many cooking/vegan websites out there, but this is my favorite because of the community here. Everybody is so supportive and friendly. Even though I haven't posted much, I still feel like a part of this great family. I feel really lucky to have found this place. Thanks and love to everyone! You guys are awesome!!!
Hi. I am ovo-lacto vegetarian but trying to become vegan. I live in Slidell, LA (approx 40 miles from N.O.). I was born and raised in New Orleans. I am 30 something. :-X I am married with two boys ages 14 and 10 and raising one nephew who is 18. The four legged members of my family include a dog and two ferrets. My boys are ovo-lacto vegetarians. My husband and my nephew eat meat but they will eat vegetarian foods and my husband will also cook vegetarian dishes. I started on the path to becoming vegetarian in the 8th grade; by the middle of my ninth grade year I became a vegetarian. My volunteering at the S.P.C.A. is what made me become vegetarian. I am a nurse(I should have been a veterinarian) with my ADN. I work as a nurse clinician for a Neurosurgery Clinic. I just registered for school to do the Bridge program to MSN and then the Adult Nurse Practitioner Program. I will graduate in 2011. I have been on this site for awhile now but have come to appreciate it even more in these past few months. The recipes are really helping me in my effort to become vegan. Reading the Q&A section is also very helpful. When I am not working and raising kids I love to travel with my husband. One of my favorite past times is scuba diving. It was so nice seeing lobsters in their own natural habitat instead of in a grocery store. Well I'm on a tangent. I really appreciate reading everyones opinions and great recipes.

Good luck to you!!! I'm currently in an ADN to BSN bridge and will hopefully finish this summer. Not sure what to do after that, I'm a bit tired of school, but would like to get my MSN and teach.
What a fun topic! I have really enjoyed reading about and getting to "know" you all.
My name is Crystal. I was a vegetarian for 10 years when I was "growing up" (about 9 years old to 19 years old). My brother raised a pig for 4H to be sold for meat at our local fair. Her name was Snuggles and she was so cute. After school, my brother and I would race home to hang out with her. We would lay our heads on her belly and give her lots of scratches behind her ears. If we got up to go somewhere, she would follow us. We would take her on walks down the street and she never left our side. My parents decided that instead of selling her at the fair, they would have her slaughtered for their own consumption. When I found out that Snuggles dead body was in our freezer, I was devastated. I cried for a long time and my parents tried to explain to me that animals are raised for food, blah blah blah. I couldn't eat meat anymore after that. I was even afraid to go into the garage where the extra freezer that held Snuggles body was kept!! I lived in a very supportive family and my mom cooked vegetarian meals especially for me. Once I moved out and went to college, I lost sight of why I was a vegetarian in the first place and started eating chicken and fish.
In March of 2006 I read Diet for a New America by John Robbins and before I could even finish the book I made a resolution to become vegan. When I told my husband about it he was a little hesitant (he loves cheese) but after sharing some passages from DfaNA, he was just as convinced as I am that veganism is the right way for us to live our lives. I am 27 and am choosing not to have children. Instead my husband and I have a cat and an adopted retired racing greyhound. We both pretty much grew up in California but in August 2005 we took a 3 week driving tour of the Southern United States. We decided to sale our home in California and move to Tennessee so we could be semi-retired and live a simpler, more rewarding life. I am passionate about healthy living, vegan & organic food, animal rights, and protecting the environment. I enjoy reading, hiking, biking, traveling, gardening, and cooking.
