Roll Call!

Edit.  The following intro is a bit old.  I unfortunately ended my long term relationship after nearly ten years.  Just couldn't be worked out.  I got the house and the dogs and am relatively happy now.  I finished my online RN to BSN program and am a genuine college graduate at the age of 48!!!  Woot!

Edit #2 - I finally reached the ripe old age of 50 and am feeling fabulous!  I always get the "you don't look 50" thing, and I attribute that to a healthy diet and lifestyle.

I deleted my Myspace page.  I do have Facebook and love to have vegwebbers for friends. You can private message me and I'll give you my name.  Or you can find me on the vegweb fan page.

Edit #3 - Finally went vegan.  The last couple of years, I've been slowly getting there, replacing household and personal products with vegan items such as vegan soaps, candles, cleaners.  I've bought vegan shoes, belts and wallets.  I'm loving it!  Decided to let my hair go naturally grey instead of coloring it so I don't get the "you don't look 50" thing as much anymore.  LOL  I now have a desk job in the admit-transfer center and hate it hate it hate.  I just can't be stuck behind a desk, and I'm the lookout for something else.

Edit #4 - Found a position at the hospital I currnetly work on an ortho floor.  I think I'll like returning to the bedside and not a desk job.  w00t

It's been a while and I thought it might be nice to for everyone who posts here to tell a little about yourself.  I took a little sabbatical from this site (went back to eating meat for two years..........bleech), but lurked from time to time, but have been a part of this site for gee, can it be 8 or more years????  But I don't know a lot of you.

I am a nurse.  I am a male. (yes, a person who will remain nameless called me a "she".)  I am gay.  I've been in a monogamous relationship for the last nine years with a great guy who now travels a lot. I was an ovo-lacto veg*n for about 12 years before slipping, I plead insanity.

I'm currently in an online program to go from an ADN RN to BSN RN and hope to finally graduate from college at the age of 48 next year.

I have a very boring blog here:  http://allnurses.com/forums/journal.php?do=showjournal&j=13

You're turn.  Tell me your business!

I'm vegetarian, working towards vegan. It's been fun thumbing around this site. I'm not a cook and as an over-the-road I have few opportunities to try anything anyway but the internet is like chew gum, something to do when theres nothing to do.

Hello.
My name is Natasha. I'm a 22 year old college student. I have been a vegetarian for 9 years and a vegan for only a few months. I live in Massachusetts, but go to school in New York. I have a cat named Noodles. I love cooking, especially baking, and am very interested in learning to make different kinds of vegan desserts. When I was only an ovo-lacto vegetarian, I made amazing cheesecake, so I would love to find a vegan cheesecake recipe that is just as good.

I'm Ann, I'm 22, and I live in Madison, WI.  I graduated in May with a degree in social work and women's studies.  I'm currently an ovo-lacto, doing a lot of vegan cooking, and trying to figure out if I can commit to going fully vegan.  I love animals, although I'm terrified of birds  :o I don't have any pets here, but my parents have a small menagerie (2 dogs, 5 cats).  I usually don't really post much here, but I'm around a lot!

Hi friends!

The name is Tammy. I'm a newly wed in the Cleveland Ohio area. After looking around on the internet for advice on a lifestyle change, I've very recently decided to cut animal products out of my diet. This is proving to be very difficult since I have no support from anyone vegan or vegitarian.

I have two wonderful pet cats, Jinx and n00bie. I also have quite a few outside creatures that venture onto my porch for nibbles, and they get them. They're all my furry babies and I love them.

The thing that mostly inspired this lifestyle change would be my apartment managment. After creating a bond with all of my outdoor furry babies, they started putting traps out and I started seeing more and more how "people" treat these small, defensless animals. It got me to start researching Ohio animal rights laws and other things. That's when I noticed that there are very few, or not enough depending on how you'd look at it.

So my diet change is to be a healthier, more productive person in society. I knwo I wouldn't wnt to spend my life being tortured only to be murdered. And no living being should have to live through that pain.

Hey!  My name is Matt.  I live in a small town in central New York called Little Falls.  I am a senior at Union College double majoring in economics and history and currently in the middle of writing two thesis (FUN!).  About two months ago I woke up and decided I should be a vegan.  After a few days I recruited my sister to change also.  Everything is easier when you have someone going through the same thing you are to talk to.  ANYWAYS, as for why I turned to veganism, like I said I just woke up and decided I should give it a try.  I was eating steak the night before.  No regrets here.  My parents don't understand, my friends don't understand, everyone I know doesn't understand, but I don't really care.  I feel healthier, happier, and just enjoying life.  After I graduate from school I want to start my own company because I don't envision myself working on anyone else's schedule, just need to find the right people to get all that started with.  But yea, ummmm that's just a little bit about me!

Ok I'll play.

I'm Alli, and I'm a veggie-newb. I guess you could say ovo-lacto because, well, I tried soy milk today and let me tell you, the "milk" part in the name is a lie. It tasted to me like the water they soak the soybeans in, dyed white. I was sad and tried to fix it with nesquik but that didn't work. I was quite disapointed, and thinking if it tasted enough like milk I'd start drinking it but nay, I can't say I could find it an aquired taste either. (So I bought real chocolate milk to make me feel better.)

I was raised in southern Louisiana, I'm Cajun, and as far as I know red beans and rice is the only vegetarian dish in cajun cuisine, and even then it probably has bacon grease in the beans. I'm currently living in Canada and going veggie for health. Been doing it a week and lost two pounds so far.

I'm married, no kids, and a graphic designer.

Alli, if you didn't like the flavor of soymilk there are lots of other "milks" out there to try--rice, almond, oat, and others. Give one of those a try. However, don't ever expect any of it to taste like dairy milk. Remove that idea from your head entirely and judge them on their own merits. You may find one of those you like, just for itself. If you like almonds, that might be a good one to start with.  :)
Welcome to VegWeb!

I didn't know there was almond milk, I may have to check that out. There's always orange juice with the added calcium that Minute Maid makes. You just can't put OJ in cereal tho.

Believe it or not we have a friend who DOES put OJ on his cereal. And I've done so with apple juice before. I happen to like all the milk alternatives, though, so I'm okay with any of them.

I've been teased for this all my life, but, to me, orange juice and cereal is the only way to eat it. Milk does nothing for cereal, just sits there...makin things wet.  Orange juice gives it flavor, kick, and personality!

WonderlandAlli, I really suggest trying different brands of soy milk.  I really like soy milk and drink it plain, but there are some brands that I REALLY don't like.  I like Silk plain and Westsoy Light, however I just bought Westsoy Organic unsweetened this week because it was on sale and BLECH!!!  I also tried Westsoy Original and I thought it tasted like baby formula  :P  So it can be trial and error until you find one you like.  :)

Heyya, Alli.  It was fun chatting with you the other day!  I agree with Biodancer and Bookmama.  Try different things and keep an open mind.  Chocolate soy milk is yummers, and do no go for the light or low fat versions of soy milk yet.  Are you used to skim milk?  If you've been drinking whole milk, soy will seem watery.  I really like soy milk on cereal, but you should try different things.  Your tastes will change, also...so what tastes watery or icky now might be great in a few months!

I toally know what you mean about red beans and rice.  (Remember I'm originally from NOLA.)  My family always made red beans with a huge ham hock, a pound of leftover ham and a pound of andoullie....so it was definitely NOT veg at our house! hehe....I do enjoy making the vegan version now, though.  :D

It comes in sweetened?? That might help... Maybe we need a seperate thread, a Soy Milk Primer?

lol Yay Cajuns... :) So you got what I meant in chat that I don't think there's really any vegetarian Cajun cuisines, except maybe beignets at Cafe du Monde, then again I dunno what goes into them, if its veggie oil or whatever they fry them in. (But man they're good... That may be worth finding out some day.)

The beans and rice plan has been working for me, and I've experimenting in yogurt-based marinades for tofu. Came out pretty good, I submitted a recipe but I don't think its been approved yet.

I'm a 24 year old female from the South. I live in Alabama right now, but Louisiana is Home.
I'm a photographer for a major university and love, love, love it!

I went the way of the vegan in March 2007, and I've never looked back. (Okay, so, I did slip up once after about a month. Blame it on stress, but know I'll never do something that drastic again. I got soooo sick! It's amazing what your body gets used to and how quickly it rejects something "foreign.")

I chose this lifestyle change as a distraction from life, to be honest. It was really just a dietary experiment. I keep with it for health reasons.

Since going vegan, I've felt better than ever! I've lost 20 pounds (with exercise too). I plan to stick with it because I love it!

Hi, I'm a high school senior from Vermont who has been ovo-lacto vegetarian for about four months now. I work seasonally as a ski instructor for toddlers. I really became involved in cooking over the summer vacation when cooking a nice veggie meals for myself was a pleasant thing to do during my breaks from swimming, hiking, and doing summer homework (My parents would not covert, so I have to at least cook dinner for myself every day). My best friend became vegan, and we always have a great time making falafel or chili whenever we hang out. These first four months have been just great, the most noticeable change being the loss of 10 lbs and a strange new level of motivation and energy when setting about school work and exercise, something I attribute to the increased levels of vitamins and fresh fruits and vegetables in my diet.  Vegetarianism has been wonderful to me so far, and it will hopefully give me the energy to go far in life.

Also, Vermont is VERY veggie friendly. My school offers a vegetarian option EVERY single day, and it's almost always delicious.

My favorite recipe has got to be the sauteed tempeh strips covered in peanut sauce. Kudos to whoever uploaded that one.

I feel very dorky with online introductions, but if I'm involving myself in VegWeb commentary, which I certainly am, it's only fair that I post in this thread.  With the permanent placement on the top of the Recipe Q&A page, it's sort of difficult to disregard...

I'm a 31-yr old vegetarian-almost-vegan.  I first became vegetarian when I was 13, but the experience only lasted through age 16 as I was raised in a super-Southern, and hence meat-happy, family, and none of us had any clue about proper nutrition.  I continued to eat meat when I first went to U of F in Gainesville, but when I hauled off to South Lake Tahoe a few years later, the healthy-consciousness of the community had its effects and I began to wean meat out of my life again.  I've only formally been veg since I moved to Orlando and started dating my vegetarian boyfriend a couple years ago, though I've been steering towards veganism since May.

I work full time as an admin asst, attend UCF part time as an English Lit major, and am hoping to (finally) get my bachelor's next year and start my master's in Liberal Arts Aug 08 or Jan 09, though I'm not really sure what I'd like to do when I 'grow up.'  I have four animals: a lab/rott mix named Riley, a shepherd/chow mix named Martha, a big orange cat named Sunny, and a chubby little gray cat named Boogie.  I love them all though I'll never have a clean house again, what with all the hair.

Now I feel like I'm rambling, so I'll wrap this up, but I would like to say I enjoy this site for many reasons, and it's served as a nice, educational resource for my vegan transition.  :)
