Bento!

Guys, I've been thinking about bento boxes for a long time. I go back to uni in my final year and I'll be having long days in classes and the library, actually working this year! Obviously I need a packed lunch to sustain me. I was doing some research and had already promised myself some chopsticks at some point. Picked up a box, some little pots for dips and a pair of chopsticks on eBay today and I'm eagerly awaiting their arrival!

Do any of you guys do this? Any pictures, hints, tips, ideas or recipes you want to share? I like the idea of silicone cupcake liners to put things in but I'm sure there are other genius things that clever people do.

I think it's a great idea :D

There are some ridiculously cute ones online http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Disney-Marie-Cat-Pink-2-Deck-Bento-Lunch-Box-Set-w-Bag_W0QQitemZ260265310402QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item260265310402

and a bunch of lunchboxes on here http://www.tokyojazzpanda.co.uk/lunchtime-118-c.asp
a fair few of which are suitable for rice and such? (do you have to have rice to consider it bento? I've only recently come across this 'bento')

edit:
I just came across some photos on flickr that you may be interested in for inspiration

Ha ha, I just bought a drop-dead Hello Kitty one on eBay with some matching chopsticks! I'm not really sure if you need rice to qualify it as a bento, to be honest I think most of mine are going to be little pots of salads and stuff, but I like the option it gives me to branch out into Asian food beyond stir fries. Thanks for the pictures, they are totally gorgeous and I want to eat them all up :)

I really like the Zojirushi Mr. Bento Stainless-Steel lined Lunch Jar--I really want to get one, but haven't found an excuse to justify the cost  :(

I think they are the cutest things.  And think of all the cool recipes that you could use with them.

I was just looking at this photo and thinking something is wrong with it--apparently the Mr. Bento is either floating or sitting on an invisible table  ;D

I was looking at that exact one at the HFS today, but it was $57 for four plastic bowls.  I was thinking I could buy backpacking type bowls with screw on lids and sew a case for them for a lot less.

You don't have to be able to sew.  I can't remember the name of it off the top of my head (sizing  ??? ) but there's this stuff, kind of looks like tape, that you iron that binds the fabric together.  My mom uses it occasionaly for curtain hems when she doesn't feel like dragging the sewing machine out.  Personally I've never tried it but they also hold for her.

It's "fusible bonding."  Stitch Witchery is the common brand.

Thanks!  I knew someone smarter than me would know what it was called.  ;)b  Don't know why I was thinking sizing...that's kind of like spray starch.

HH is always the wise one... It's funny, whenever I picture HH talking in my head I picture an old, wise cat (cuz of Cat's pic on her profile). HH not that you're old, I'm just sayin (it's a compliment dont worry) ;)b

after reading this thread, i thought, hm, i wonder what bento boxes look like.  i mean.  i've seen them before.  but i wanted to see the variety of them after seeing that tall cylindar one.  anyways.  it got really interesting, and i bought one in the heat of the bento moment.  haha.  i found it on ebay for 12$.  really cheap.... now that i think of it.... i hope its not total crap.  but ohwell.  its cute.  so yeah.  i would check ebay for sweet deals!

earth guard, how was sweden?!?!?  actually.  i might start a new thread just to hear your stories.... look out!

My daughter has this one and it is most definitely worth the $$$.  I dare not tell her there is a Hello Kitty one or she'll want to trade up!

me too!  i actually purposefully make just a little bit extra food each night to have for lunch the next day.  the difficult part is to not eat that little last bit and to try and keep michael from eating the little last bit.  haha. its so tempting!
