Cali and me....camping.... NVR

Hi guys,

I left last Sunday for the Adirondacks.  Should still be there until July 22nd but we came back yesterday.
The deer flies were horrendous and I am covered in welts.  Also broke out in a rash on my neck.  Now my whole upper body in the front has a rash that looks like measles.  Cali started vomiting and had diarrhea.  Just took her to the vets and $371 later, she will be OK.  She has a weakened immune system to begin with and she was drinking lake water and I guess something didn't agree with her.
So instead of sitting at home next week, I am going back to work.  The deer flies were biting Cali a lot too.
All in all, I can mark this down as my least favourite vacation ever.  :(
Cali nearly caught a chipmunk.  I screamed so loudly that many campers looked over to see what had happened.  Thankfully she didn't chase the many ducks who all had babies.  Hopefully, I got some good pictures of them.  It is an absolutely beautiful campground.
Rained most of the time and was cold but there isn't a prettier place.  We will try the camping thing in another year or two.  I will just make sure her immune system is much stronger.
Oh, she has a secondary bacterial infection on her skin right now.  That started there as well.
Now I must go and do laundry.  My sleeping bag is covered in everything that came out of both ends of Cali, my blankets and pillows are the same.  As is the inside of my car.  Will have to take it in to have the seats properly cleaned.
So, anything new and exciting happen while I was away?  :)

Sorry to hear the trip was a disater, but hopefully you got a few good memories to keep with you, or some bad ones to remind you not to go back into the wild  :D

Glad you guys are back in one piece.  Sounds utterly miserable.

We took an anniversary hike last year with our Raika (at the time 9 y/o) and her hips were not in the best of shape (we've since fixed a few things and she's improved as she's aged).  Anyway, we took a day trip into Linville Gorge, not really noticing the elevation change on our trail maps.  It kept getting progressively steeper and more treacherous, but at least we were descending...we got to the bottom at 7:30 PM and had about 5 minutes to play before I started getting paranoid that we'd end up hiking out of the gorge after dark, a prospect I was not interested in.  The problem was, Raika would not come.  She sat in the water with this defiant look of "no way in hell am I going up what you just dragged me down."

After much coaxing we got her moving, but she stopped maybe 25 times because she just didn't want to screw with it and another dozen, Will had to pick her up and carry her up rock cliffs, with me standing behind, holding both packs and acting as some sort of stabilization tool.  Fortunately it was in June and light held for most of the hike out.

Not one of my better days...

It's good that you guys are home and stabilized.  You're supposed to enjoy your time in the woods, right?

Maybe you could take half the week off to recoup? And make some great recipes?

Just a thought!  :D

Then again, I hate working in any capacity, so don't listen to me.

Glad you and the pup are getting better!!

Man, I'm sorry to hear that. I think we were all going to enjoy the trip with you vicariously. Sounds like the vacation from hell, though. I'm sure you and Cali both were glad to be home.

I second Meggs' suggestion that you take a few days to recuperate. You need a vacation from your vacation--in a big way!

Take care, you. And I hope Cali bounces back quickly, too.

Too bad about the trip.  When I travel I'd rather camp than stay in a hotel.  It's nice to be able to come home early when it's really bad.

If you camp, you may appreciate my find today.  I found a Kelty tent on clearance.  It has a 7' x 7' floor space and is 6' (!) in height with a 6' deep vestibule.  The first time I went car camping (we always backpacked growing up) I had a small backpacking tent, not expecting people to have mini tent mansions.  I'm so set now.  The most awesome part is that it was marked down to $100.

Well I took Cali to the park tonight and she was happy.  She ran and played.  My rash is still gross but I am sure it will go away, whatever it is.
I do love camping and Cali and I will be going on a three day women's retreat with the Dog Paddling people in August with two of my close friends and one of my friend's two standard poodles.
Hopefully, Cali will fare well.
As for taking a couple of days off next week, it would be nice but if I do, I won't be able to take a full week off in the fall and I have a feeling I will want the break then.  Will take the week of Canadian Thanksgiving in October and go and visit my friends in Michigan for 4 days.  Then come home and relax!
I am still doing laundry.  I didn't know a dog could soil so many things in such a short time!  I am very happy she now seems none the worse for wear.
I was also a bad girl tonight.  My sister gave me my birthday presents to take home and open in a couple of weeks.  I opened them tonight!  ::)  Of course, I will not let her know that!!!!!
I keep thinking I should buy a tent but I really don't have camping friends so will hold off....unless they go dirt cheap somewhere in the fall.
I do get 5 weeks vacation a year now but for this year, only have the week left and am really looking forward to a few days at my friend's house in Michigan.  Of course I could set up a tent in their backyard....but won't! hee hee hee.
Came home to many cherry and cupid tomatoes.  Every time I walk out the door, I pop one or two in my mouth.  Yum Yum!
