Cornell University offering online courses in plant-based nutrition
http://www.plantbasednutrition.org/
Many features of the site are still in the works, but it looks like a very promising source of info about the benefits of a plant-based diet. You can share your story about how healthy eating changed your life, or find a "coach" who can help you make the transition, or take online courses directed by T. Colin Campbell!
I emailed Cornell and found out there are 32 seats per course each time one is offered. There are 3 courses; the first one starts 1/7/09 and enrollment is open now. The cost is $295 per course, or $795 for all 3. After completing all 3 courses you become "certified" in plant-based nutrition. Neat! I would love to take these but don't have the funds to do so at the moment. (I'm sure most of us don't, but just wanted to pass along the news of the exciting opportunity!)
greenT I love ya!!!!!!!! ;)b
lol. uhhh.. "certified" in plant based nutrition? what does that even mean? :P
haha. sorry, i don't mean to be so critical, it does seem really cool that they have those classes offered online!
This is really great--it might sound corney, but the fact that Cornell is offering courses like this is a big deal! It represents a significant shift in not only how people are thinking and changing their diets, but it is transitioning into peoples lives via school and potentially work! Cornell is such a great school too--they have a really great reputation so they will add credibility to this branch of nutrition! *woot*
Thank you so much for posting this--the tution is actually really low considering it is for Cornell--I pay over $1000 for every 3 credit online class i take at my state university so $300/per is a steal! Do you have to apply and be accepted into Cornell or is this a non-credit/public type class--also, can you apply federal fin-aid to the tution?
i have a friend who graduated from their nutrition program last spring. the normal one though.
Awww yay! I graduated just a bit too early and missed it. There were NO plant based nutrition courses when I went there, only the nasty meat and dairy based ones. This IS significant--because Cornell loves their meat/dairy/USDA! ::) ::) I'm glad to hear about it. :)

Yes! They are a big ag school! You know Gene Baur (founder of Farm Sanctuary) went there and did the ag progarm as a way to understand the corporate/ag business--he tells some pretty shocking stories of things that happened during the course *shudders* I don't know how he made it through--such a strong person!!
Thanks for posting this. It looks quite interesting. $300 per seems pretty good. I have taken other short courses related to biology that were about the same price...and lasted only for a couple of weeks (inlcuding a break in between).
ohh...must check this out...how cool.
EDITED TO ADD:
Okay, I talked with the online counselor and they said that:
-No, this course is not for credits. Just the certificate.
-The certificate does not entitle you to DO anything but helps bulk up your resume and is good for personal referance.
-The person teaching the class it the author of the china study I guess.
-Sessions start once a month, and each of the three classes are 2 weeks long.
-All materials needed for the class are available online, so you do not need to buy anything else (but they recommend reading the China Study before hand)
-You are graded on quizzes and participation with online message forums.
-The name "Cornell" does not appear anywhere on the certificate.
I think I will do this. I do not think you can apply for FAFSA for this but i for got to ask. I think that becasue it is not for credit.
I really think I will take this class at some point. I do not think I can take it right now, but I do want o do it at some point. :)
I'm in culinary school and lets just say the nutrition sections is somewhat 'light' when it comes to veganism....like my nutrition instructor is not into vegan at all...not enough B12..blah blah
I think this class would really help suplement my learning. Can't do it this semester though...took a full load...maybe in the spring-summer?????
OMG I am so excited!!!!! :D

Yeah, the certification is just fluff...I think mainly to entice professionals or businesses that could use an extra label to boost business. But hey, anything to convince people to become more educated about the topic works for me!

Shoot for summer Jane!! ;)b I know, I was super excited too when I first read about this. But, I have to say this, I know enough now about the benefits of eating plants to be very angry at the whole system- learning more might make me go over the edge!!
For example, a coworker's 47 year old husband just had quadruple bypass surgery a few weeks ago and is still in the hospital recovering due to complications. She just said in the lunchroom today, "John said when he gets out of the hospital, we're going straight to McDonald's to get double cheeseburgers, and then we're going to pick up a pizza after. He can't stand that hospital food!" (laughs, but is being serious!) The fact that they don't realize how dangerous those foods are is appalling! I mean, everyone knows fast food isn't good for you, but they don't know how REALLY bad it is. I actually tried to get him to read the China Study about 6 months ago but he refused. After he gets out of the hospital, I would LOVE visit with him and tell him that he can heal himself with whole foods and feel soooo much better. But I know my attempts would be in vain due to a society/government that does everything to convince consumers otherwise. I can't imagine how frustrating it must be for people like T. Colin Campbell who have worked for the government and have seen the events unfold with their own eyes, realizing firsthand how insignificant the science and the facts are against the power of the the almighty dollar and the meat & dairy industries. Withholding valuable information from the public that could make such a positive change for so many people's lives is criminal!
You know greenT I got to agree with you. Somewhere along the line "PROFIT" became more important than "PEOPLE". It really angers me sometimes....
Note to greenT:
Have you ever read Francis Moore Lappe??? I think you would really enjoy her and her daughter Anna. You can check them out at SmallPlanet.org. Or just google her name....or check out some of the videos on YouTube. She is my inspiration!!!!
Lots of LOVE :)>>>
