What kind of music do you prefer?
Since moving here to Long Island I have been craving country music, wierd! I think it is because I a country girl living in the big city and am experiencing culture shock because of it.
Get this, there isn't one single country music station. NYC, the 10th largest city in the world, the largest city in the US, and there are NO country music stations.
Find a CD.
SnowQueen, have you heard of Pandora Radio? you can create your own stations, just type in the names of bands you like. It's free to use.
There wasn't a country station in San Francisco until about 3 years ago. Thank god Nashville has at least 4 within range of my house!
My favorite type of music is ska and there are absolutely no stations around that play it! :'(
Mostly metal. Long, loud, hard metal.
There's a show on one radio station for four hours on Sunday nights, that's it. But I don't mind, because radio in general is pretty shite. Too much talking, too many ads, too much generic music.
CDs and my ipod are my friends though.
Acoustics, folk, alternative.
rock of nearly all forms (modern day pop, not so much), folk, blues, jammy. I've been to shows ranging from bluegrass festivals, to death-punk....and have enjoyed myself at all. (with the exception of one opener....but it is okay, when the headliner came on, the teeny boppers got more scared than I was of their band!)

I never heard of this, but I'm checking it out right now! Crumbled Cookie, thank you!

You can also check out last.fm. It's totally free, you have to end up paying for Pandora after you listen for so many hours.

Are you sure about that?
I've been listening to pandora for a long time and they have never asked for payment.
I can't seem to figure out how to listen to last.fm.. it wont let me play any of the music I select.
I'm a fan of jango.com - actually plays what you want it to.

I'm not sure, I just heard that through the grapevine.
I had to select a lot of artists before last.fm would work for me, but it started playing instantly for a friend of mine. And thanks Erin, I may just have to check out jango as well. :-*
Topic of Pandora Radio. You can upgrade but I have never listened to more than what is allowed. I can't remember I think it's 30 hours a month or so, so if you run out in one month you can start listening again next month. You just have to remember to log off after each session even deleting your cookies won't log you off so you have to do it manually before you click the screen off.
On the topic of what music I like it depends on the day and the mood I'm in, I love all kinds of genres. Sometimes I'm in the mood for Kate Bush, Bat For Lashes, always in the mood for Tori Amos, other times I'm in the mood for NIN, Days of The New, TOOL, Floater. I'm a fan of 60's 70's music too like Kate Bush, Marianne Faithful, Leonard Cohen etc. On Pandora I have a station called I Go Wild that is mostly Poe and Fiona Apple. Lykki Li Radio Station, which plays a lot of Santigold, Kat Power, Feist style music. The music I like least is Country and rap but do have a love for Tanya Tucker and Alison Krauss, and sometimes i'm in the mood for T.I.
Ryan Adams is one of my favorites ( love is hell), not Brian Adams Ryan. :P and PJ Harvey. Still like Skid Row and all the long hair bands I wasn't suppose to be listening too but did. I just love music. Blonde Redhead is a great band, Kings of Leon, Silversun Pickups, still enjoy Sonic Youth ( dirty boots) Right now I'm listening to Take it Back off the Division Bell ( Pink Floyd)
Pink is great too.

can you open this? it's aol music. You go into alternative music and they give you a list of different types. Ska is one of them

Thanks CrumbledCookie!
I have a profile on last.fm and used to update it all the time, but haven't logged in for about three years haha. I didn't know you could listen to music for free through last.fm though...

Agreed. That's pretty well general to all radio stations. When I was a kid I was going to buy a radio transmitter so I could have the one unsucky station in town (I lived in Chattanooga, TN at the time) and decided against it when I discovered a 30-foot radius wasn't enough to cover much.
My favorite music is metal. It doesn't even matter sometimes what the bands are, but in general I prefer operatic (i.e., Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, etc.) or at least melodic (like Dark Tranquillity or Amorphis). Sometimes, though, I just need to have my entire world flipped around by loud, awesome music.
awesome. I have seen Nightwish and Dark Tranquillity live, such an experience!!! Also, I've not heard of Amorphis but I love the Finnish metal sound, so will now have to check them out... thanks!
Sure thing. I haven't seen DT live, but a month before Fufu and I married she took me to see Nightwish (my favorite band EVER).
Amorphis... ya gotta be in the mood. But they have a saxophone which is its own kind of cool. :)
can I ask your opinion on Tarja v Anette Olzon? So many people trash on Anette, it's pretty sad. Yeah, she's not as amazing as Tarja, but I think she's a pretty good fit with the band.
She was also super cute when we saw them in Germany, she was saying she felt outnumbered by the Finns in the band, and so wanted to bring another Swedish friend out to keep her company... cue a bottle of Absolut vodka, which she then spent the rest of the set swigging from. haha, it was gold.
Haha, I'm totally ok with random saxophony, so will definitely check out Amorphis.
