What kind of music do you prefer?
Since moving here to Long Island I have been craving country music, wierd! I think it is because I a country girl living in the big city and am experiencing culture shock because of it.
Get this, there isn't one single country music station. NYC, the 10th largest city in the world, the largest city in the US, and there are NO country music stations.

Right now I'm very much into Yann Tiersen, who does a lot of fantastic instrumental songs. He also did the music for Amelie and goodbye lenin.
My biggest influences include (in this order):
Radiohead
Belle and Sebastian (as from the user name you may have guessed)
The Smiths
Jeff Buckley
Elliot Smith
Yann Tiersen
Jens Lekman
Sigur Rós (pronounced contrary to popular belief, something more like-seer russ)
Hefner
The Good Life
As that's 10 I'll leave it there.
Currently enjoying:
Yann
Bright Eyes
The Beta Band
Granddaddy
can I ask your opinion on Tarja v Anette Olzon? So many people trash on Anette, it's pretty sad. Yeah, she's not as amazing as Tarja, but I think she's a pretty good fit with the band.
She was also super cute when we saw them in Germany, she was saying she felt outnumbered by the Finns in the band, and so wanted to bring another Swedish friend out to keep her company... cue a bottle of Absolut vodka, which she then spent the rest of the set swigging from. haha, it was gold.
Haha, I'm totally ok with random saxophony, so will definitely check out Amorphis.
This is Matt (not Fufu). I'm too lazy to sign out of her account and into mine. Also my profile picture is prettier, for the time being. WOO
I have pretty much the same view you do. Tarja's got her own thing now with Marcelo, though it's not as big as when she was with Nightwish (and it sounds kinda... weird) but her vocals with Nightwish were a bit overpowering. Everything, no matter what song it was, to her, was to have the dynamics of "The Phantom of the Opera." So I think Annette's a better blend with the band, as she enhances, but doesn't overpower, them.

This is Matt again, restating as Matt. See above for my less-than-humble opinion I have to keep defending against Tarja purists.

My problem with YT is listening to several of his albums, it starts to sound a bit samey. You can tell it's him, y'know? I mean, yes, each musician has their style but...Iono.
I feel old today, I mentioned Jethro Tull to someone who is only 9 yrs younger than me and I had to explain that it's not a person, it's a band...Ian Anderson, people! The man who brought the flute into rock and roll!
I guess I was lucky to have much-older siblings who played a lot of music in my presence and talked to me about the musicians. I mention some of the great rock musicians of the 70's to students and they are like, "Who?" Don't "who" at me when I mention Eric Clapton...it makes me sad.

there are a few songs that have some similarities for me but I think that's because of how he's had different versions of them and sometimes played them very closely together.
I think I've heard la crisie and le quartire played as one long song before. so if I hear one I think of the other.
Apart from that I wouldn't say they sound samey, there are major differences in play.
That said he plays really very fast, and he plays often very hard as well. Often either the guitar, accordian, or of course, the violin.
Unless for instance you mean goodbye lenin, because it's a sound track so some of the songs are close to identical.
Have you heard Neil Hannon (lead singer of the divine comedy) singing with him?
Have you heard the CD 'on tour'?
shelloid-I know it doesn't want to work in the US, and I presume it's same for many other countries. Get in contact with someone from NZ and ask them if they can download and run it?
grooveshark is better I find for music, although not a good a lay out.
Have you thought about getting a real copy of the artists you like?
I've got most of mine so that I can walk around listening to them...
...or about £200 should get a lot of downloads (unless you erm, you know, don't use £££)
I've never heard of grooveshark....I shall look into it. The reason I love spotify is because I can listen to the album a few times to see if I like the whole thing before purchasing it. If I like it then I'll buy the download.
Also, I really like spotify when I feel like listening to something totally silly that I would never want to buy. An example was a drunken evening with my sister reminiscing (?sp) about our childhood and on came spotify with McHammer, tifany, salt-n-pepa and other such shite!! I wouldn't really want to actually purchase those songs!
I agree with CrumbledCook... I can always always go for some NIN. I'll admit I'm slightly obsessed with them but that's the only thing I'm obsessed with. Well, that and just music in general. My iPhone is always playing NIN and/or Radiohead.

Grooveshark is spotify without adverts, free and browser based. It doesn't have it's own software.
ooh, I so meant to come back to this thread and forgot: teh mattness, my husband looked up some Amorphis and was super impressed. I just have to wait for the time to be able to free up some space on my teeny ancient ipod so I can listen too...
also, good call on Nightwish : )
ahhh music, how you make me happy...

if you were alive for the 8-bit gen, you've probably saved princesses and fought waves of aliens to this kinda stuff :)
My main music is hardcore, but my other main music is ska. I'm also into folk punk stuff...

Sweet, another that listens to hardcore and punk.
Welcome!
Folk is sweet, too. And ska. And classical, jazz, experimental...I'm going to stop now, I could go on forever.

Hey oww, check out Kylesa. They have an angry female singer, too.

And if you're feeling saucy, check out Circle Takes the Square. CTTS and Kylesa are both from my home state.
