MY MOM ALMOST MADE ME STOP BEING VEGAN!!

:-\ this was the worst thing that ever happened to me.
she wouldn't shut up about telling me how "skinny" i am.
i really don't think i'm that thin, and i eat plenty.
my mom wants me to gain 5 pounds. and she said i could only do that if i started consuming dairy again. it made me soooooo mad.
we got into a huge argument.
then i talked to my dad. and he talked to my mom. and everything is cool now.
but omg, it sucked. i was so scared.

Thats awful.  :'(  I'm sure shes just confused and trying to do whats best for you.  You should do what you can to help her understand logically why you weigh enough and why your diet is perfectly healthy.  Some people just dont get it in the end, but she must be a decent person to raise a good daughter.  :)

You're dog is so cuteeee  ;D

way to stand up for what you believe in. she can't force you to eat dairy...

My mom has been weird about the no dairy thing too lately--I just keep explaining and hope it sinks in :)

Good luck sweetie!!

you look normal sized..
and yeah my mother had a problem with me becoming vegan too. she still does to be honest, she keeps buying yogurt and stuff to try and get me to eat it but I've learned by now to not trust anything she cooks  :(

tell her that you'll use more avocados and peanut butter in your foods to boost the fat so she won't worry..

plus - who wouldn't want an excuse to eat more avocados & peanut butter??

Sorry you had to deal with that chickpea and good for you for holding your ground.  At 19 she shouldn't be telling you what to eat, that's your decision.

My mom has always had a problem with my being vegan, though she did not influence my decision to be vegetarian. Her reasons were exactly the same.

However, to be fair, many, many girls use veganism as a way to hide an eating disorder. If you *have* to be picky about what you eat because of your beliefs, then it's a lot harder for people to say, "oh, that person might have an eating disorder."

I am not saying this is your situation, but it sounds like she is worried about you and your health. It seems a lot more like this is her being scared that something else might be wrong, less so than it is about her trying to force her beliefs and habits onto you.

Having lost several kilos (yays  :D) after a few months being vegan, it's logical to think that this initial weight loss is simply due to the removal of fatty dairy products from my diet. Sooo, why would anyone take the illogical step of reintroducing said products into one's diet, when they were obviously unhealthy to begin with?  :o ???

If a person eats a balanced, varied diet of the foods that are best for them, they will eventually reach their IDEAL WEIGHT. Chickpea, you must be of the naturally-slender body type, and if that's cool with you, it ought to be cool with your mother, right?  ::)

Personally I know I'll always be curvy, never willowy, and I'm happy with that aim... I just need to remove some of my excess padding to get there!!... discipline, discipline, discipline.  ;D ;D ;D

maybe its this texas thing!  when i first started working here, my co workers told me i need to eat more meat and get more fat on my bones.  im 120 lbs and only 5'2, I am at a perfect weight, they're mostly overweight and obese, talking about how many of their friends died of this diabetic "epidemic" and heart disease.

that article in the austin american statesman didnt help either.  I think it was in the paper on wednesday, but it was titled something like 'maybe grandma was right' it was about how having some meat on your bones is a good thing because being just a little overweight can help deter some health problems.  Maybe that's what sparked your mom to say that!

btw.  are you on myspace?  we should hang out the next time i go into austin, we could go to mr natural and catch a movie at the alamo drafthouse or something.  i love that place!  www.myspace.com/jammypants

:P  It could be a texas thing.  When I visited texas everywhere we ate they gave everyone (but me) slabs of meat the size of their (huge) plates and like, 3 peas.  ::)

i've never understood why anyone would assume cow's milk to be a necessary part of a human diet anyway, as though humans & cows have always coexisted in a symbiotic relationship since the beginning of time...

and yes, my texas friend has told me stories about being served grossly oversized meals in texas restaurants. she said one time she asked for a box to take home her unfinished meal, and everyone was completely shocked and incredulous she couldn't finish it... i can only imagine...

Cutething has a good point.  My mom had a similar reaction when I went vegan, but she's calmed down since.  I just had to show her that I could be healthy about the whole thing.  I suspect she is just worried about you at heart.  There are so many misconceptions about vegan diets.  And moms worry.  That's what they do.  You just have to prove that she is wrong about the absurd idea of your having to drink cow's milk.
Good luck, chickpea! :)
