Quotes

I thought a good topic would be to start a thread with cool veg*n quotes.
I know I've heard some great ones.... but I can't think of any right now... hence the need for this thread.  :D

Heehee... ;D

"He is a heavy eater of beef. Me thinks it doth harm to his wit."
W. Shakespeare - Twelfth Night

In the late 70's film "Little Darlings", there's a food fight in the camp dining hall. The vegetarian girl sighs, wipes food from her face,  and says, "Every time they eat meat--this is what happens."

I seem to recall this from the peta website a while ago (can't locate it now, so I don't know who said it)

"Just because we cannot stop all suffering doesn't mean we shouldn't stop any."

Nutdragon, your quote reminds me of another.  It could certainly be applicable to veg*nism...

"We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean.  But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop." - Mother Teresa of Calcutta

And this quote is not quite a veg*n one, but a good one, I think:

"Men are the only animals that devote themselves, day in and day out, to making one another unhappy." - H.L. Mencken

I think everyone probably knows this one:
"Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet."
                      -Albert Einstein
Also like this one:
“While we ourselves are the living graves of murdered animals, how can we expect any ideal living conditions on this earth?”
                    - Isadora Duncan

Ok, here is a silly one that I read somewhere on a different vegan board....

"Yo' mama so vegan, she drinks Wild Tofurkey!"

For some reason that makes me smile :D

"For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love."
        -Pythagoras

"Our task must be to free ourselves . . . by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty."

Though I am not religious, I know some of you are and thought you might enjoy this quote I came across:

"When a human being kills an animal for food, he is neglecting his own hunger for justice. Man prays for mercy, but is unwilling to extend it to others. Why then should man expect mercy from God? It is unfair to expect something that you are not willing to give."
Isaac B. Singer

This one is funny!  No offense to any exotic dancers out there.  ;)

"Eating responsibly at McDonald's is like going to a strip club for the iced tea."
Roger Ebert (Journalist, Sun Times)

And one more:

We all love animals. Why do we call some "pets" and others "dinner?"
~ K.D. Lang (musician)

Thanks to JenniferHughes for starting this thread!  Keep those quotes coming.  ;D

Atrocities are not less atrocities when they occur in laboratories and are called medical research.  -George Bernard Shaw

The beef industry has contributed to more American deaths than all the wars of this century, all natural disasters, and all automobile accidents combined. If beef is your idea of 'real food for real people,' you'd better live real close to a real good hospital.  -Neal D. Barnard, M.D

I don't have anything to add.  I will only say, I have enjoyed this thread more than any other in a very long time.  THANK YOU Jen, ohhh so much.  I have these saved for later use.

Being quite enamoured with Isadora Duncan, I am surprised I had not heard that quote from her.  I know I don't want to be the grave of any murdered creature.

Wow...you all amaze me!

"To avoid causing terror to living beings, let the disciple refrain from eating meat... the food of the wise is that which is consumed by the sadhus ; it does not consist of meat... There may be some foolish people in the future who will say that I permitted meat-eating and that I partook of meat myself, but... meat-eating I have not permitted to anyone, I do not permit, I will not permit meat-eating in any form, in any manner and in any place; it is unconditionally prohibited for all." Dhammapada

"I abhor vivisection. It should be at least curbed. Better, it should be abolished. I know of no achievement through vivisection, no scientific discovery, that could have not been obtained without such barbarism and cruelty. The whole thing is evil." Dr. Charles Mayo (Founder, Mayo Clinic)

"What must human beings be, to destroy what we can never create?...I love the forests, I don't eat meat; a most eccentric person!"--Anton Chekov in Uncle Vanya.

I find it v. interesting that Chekov was aware of the devastation caused by deforestation and habitat change more than a hundred years ago. He was already cognizant of the importance of conserving natural forests to conserve water supplies and of the impact of industrialization on the landscape. In Uncle Vanya he puts quite a lot of hard-hitting ecological knowledge in the mouth of his character Dr. Astrov.
