omgomgomg, I'm kinda freakin out!! I just went downstairs to put the bread away, and maybe get a cupcake, heehee. THERE'S A FRAKING BLACK SALAMANDER ON MY FRAKIN KITCHEN COUNTER!!! omgomgomg. We've been battling ants for a few weeks, and we've got roly polys, but a salamander?! So I called my bf, and the girl he's putting up art w/ at school said that she gets them in her house too. He told me to pick it up and put it outside. LOL, riiiiiight.
I hate this place! Screw nursing school, I don't want to live here anymore!! :'( :'( :'(
end rant. thanks for listening.
Um *EEWWW* I am shuddering for you! That fracking sucks!!!! I would b so pissed off if I had salamendars running around my house too! I stayed at a house in Florida for a week once and they would just have salamanders hanging on there walls...you would wake up and one would be *bam* in your face *gross*--I am sooooooo sorry you have to put up with the stuff Pink :( I'm sending you lots of love!!!
I'm not sure if they work on salamanders....but I do know, for a fact, that the super sonic pest repelers (spl?) WORK for ants, spiders and mosquitoes!! Supposedly they work for rodents as well, however, luckily I haven't had that problem.... Cats are good that way!
My children would take it outside for you!!!! Wow, I've never heard of salamanders turning up on counters. It could be worse....... you could be in Florida and have to deal with flying roaches. :o
I share my home with lizards sometimes. They are always around the house, when I go out they scatter about about a dozen or so. When they find their way indoors, I just leave them alone. No harm done and I hear it's good luck. So maybe having a salamander is good luck.
Oh, I forgot to mention (just remembered) that when I was still living at home in TX, we randomly started having these lizard type things showing up in the house. Oh, I think they were geckos. BUT, they were all babies..and they were CLEAR. Like I said, I've never had a problem with any type of creature..but these things were weird. I just wondered where they all were coming from. I either left them alone..or took them outside. It did make me feel a li'l weird though.
Keep me updated!
awww.. dont hate the cute salamanders! my friend had some pet ones named mike & ike.. they are really cool!.. they arent there cuz its dirty, they just wanna eat your bugs..
i have a house gecko here.. i love him so much.. he is actually my second one cuz my maid ( i live in a sort of inn/hotel/apartment thing and it comes with free maid service) found him one time and tried to cut off his head with a broom stick.. she only succeeded in partly crushing him and when i tried to help him he sorta of squished himself in a crack between the floor and the wall and then died.. it was totally sad.. but the geckos here are so cute.. they try to change the color of whatever they are on, and since the walls are white he tries to go white.. hes close.. a sort of corpse grey color.. it makes me laugh.. (allychristine, i think thats why the ones you saw were clear :) )
but dont hate your little amphibian.. they are nice.. at least its not an 8 inch long carnivorous centipede that eats bats and frogs and if it bites you you have a massive crater shaped scar in your legs.. thats what we have here.. they suck..
Aw, how cute! My whole family is gaga for reptiles and amphibians and would adore your little "houseguests." I have to admit, as much as I love them, it probably would freak me out the first time I ever saw one making itself at home on my counter and I would ask one of my kiddos to catch it, which they would gladly do, LOL! As for the ants, you're not alone in those! I swear we live on a giant colony. Our soil is extremely sandy...good for being able to pull up weeds, but really frustrating that all the ants in the world seem to reside in our yard.
no no no, I don't hate the salamander, in any other circumstance, I'd think he's the most cutest thing ever, but it's MY kitchen. Where I bake and create wonderful yummy things. I hate this apartment, and my kitchen is the one place where I kinda felt OK, I just don't like that I don't really have control over my apartment. It's got bad vibes, I've never felt comfortable here, it's just not working, bad juju. I shall name him Pete, and hopefully he'll eat all the bugs that come in uninvited.
A lot of salamanders are endangered/threatened from habitat loss! It's good this guy has a nice home! 8-)
(((pb))) I lived up near Sunset and I never had a problem with ants or salamanders. Seriously, you've tried with your place - it's time to jump ship and find a place you don't hate.
Update peeps, it looks like Pete has died. On my counter. So much for free pest control.
Whaaaa? Why did he die?
No clue. I looked before I went for a walk to the grocery store, and he was "hiding" behind the little ant hotel thingy I have on the counter (he's way too big to get into it, so I don't think it was that). I came back, he's still there, hasn't moved. I'm not going to poke him to find out, my bf can do that when he gets home from school tonight.

I told you those salamander cupcakes were a bad idea Pink...no--seriously, I'm sorry he died, that's sad :(
Have you tried doing any fen sui (SP?) in your place? Maybe it will help with the bad vibes.

Those are anoles. We have them. You can tell where they've been living by their color. Our house is white with black shutters. The pink (or clear) ones have been staying on the white bricks or wood trim. The black ones live under or on the shutter slats. Green ones have been living on a plant or in the grass. All the same kind of little lizard. They are so cool! We had one unfortunate little one get in the house and Biscuit (our black cat) killed it. I didn't know what he had was an anole until I found its tail that had popped off when it tried to escape.
They can be kept as pets. I much prefer to see them in their wild state. http://members.aol.com/Mite37/TPFGA.html
Oh!! Thanks for that. Yeah, I dunno if my parents have seen any lately..this was a year...year and a half ago. But, that's neat to know! I don't think I would have been weirded out at all if they weren't clear-ish. Black would have been fine..but you know, clear is just odd. ;)

FYI: Peppermint oil works for mice...a few drops on a cotton ball in corners or cracks where they get in. (We have/had them at hubbys shop... dog food maker with open bins of grain on one side, bottle depot behind us and we're the only unit that's heated, so they go next door for dinner, out back for something to drink and sleep at our place.) "Traditional" methods were working far to well :'( but we haven't caught one since I started the peppermint oil. The place smells weird, a melange of engine oil, gear oil, gasoline, diesel, exhuast and peppermint oil but I don't care (and I don't care if the customers complain) because it works!

I found a mouse in my house not too long ago - this is a great solution!
(guess what I did with little mousey? he was in the garbage can, inside a plastic bag. I grabbed the plastic bag and held it closed. I ran outside, and set mickey free! he was ok, but I hope he doesn't find his way back into my kitchen...)
in the last apt (duplex) i lived in, there was an opossum living in the wall. there was a cellar underneath, so we think that's how he got in. anyway, it was a tiny apt and my bed was against the wall. during the night, i could hear him scratching and running back and forth. it was really awful. i didn't sleep for months. my landlord called animal control and they put a cage in the cellar....all it ever caught was my neighbor's cat though.
