So I said: "Look, your not the first person to..."
Ive been out giving vegetarians a bad reputation.... ::)
At work this morning one of my coworkers attempted to engage me in a debate about the ethics of raising a child as a vegetarian which turned into a debate about vegetarianism which turned into him trying to get me to "see the error of my vegetarian ways".... One of his friends is a vegetarian, he was raised that way and my coworker thinks it was wrong of his parents to "deprive him" (his friend is about 20 and still lives a vegetarian lifestyle.) My coworker believes that if a person has never tasted meat, they will not be inclined to taste it later in adulthood and will therefore be deprived of the pleasure of meat consumption. He believes a child should be able to eat what they want starting from eh time they can point to something and shriek... ::) He said that a person who has never had meat had no business deciding weatehr it was good for you or not (he incorrectly assumed Ive been vegetarian from birth) Although I've never tried crystal meth, I know its not good for me and I expect veggie raised person can do the same thing with meat and that weather a person has ever tried something before has nothing to do with scientist evidence supporting its health risks. then it went into
"animals aren't tortured, they are raised for meat..." then
"animals don't experience pain or fear...well, maybe pain---but fear is human..."
"plants are living things too...."
"you cant get protein if you don't eat meat..."
After trying to be reasonable and argue these points I got fed up pretty quickly and said, "look, kid...you arnt the first person to try to convince me to eat meat in the past 6 years or whatever. None of them succeeded in getting me to do it, and neither will you..." Its juts ALWAYS the same exact arguments (almost word-for-word) with the same cocky attitude...year after year...can't omnis come up with something more original?!
I've been really short on patients lately and I think was on my last nerve. it might have been in part because he was an hour late...But I know i was bad...hehehe...I kind like being snotty from time to time...but I apologize tot eh community for giving veggies a bad rep... ;)
aww, sometimes they just don't want to give up.
i forgive you.
it's understandable - your impatience. to be honest, I'm glad I don't have these long kind of debates with omnis. I don't think I'd be able to do veg*nism justice - I just can't hold my own, and that's usually when it comes to things that are really important to me. what a ironic situation... that's something I need to work on.
ok. tangent done.

just be nice and don't force anything on them. it seems counter productive but it is the only way they will take you seriously and not feel threatened. in my experience, anyway.
sometimes the arguments are just to rediculus to combat. the worse one i heard was that theres a majick thing in meat that makes you feel good :o
the worse one i heard was that theres a majick thing in meat that makes you feel good :o
Are you talking about animal flesh? Or maybe the person who said that was thinking of the other meat.

ha ha ;D :D
I always get omnis telling me that if I don't eat meat but I believe a woman should have the freedom to choose to have an abortion that I'm a hypocrit--apparently I have to be for killing animals if I'm going to be for a woman to have rights...whatever...
That logic is so flawed on so many levels . . . . I guess the question for you is why you kept up the discussion with the man? He's clearly a bonehead.

this reminds me of my roomate, who says she is not speciesist because she has no problems with humans being tortured or eaten by any other living things. she says it's called biocentrism. and i'm pretty sure she is only half joking

As a vegan, you'd be a hypocrit if you were eating the abor...

OMG--where is my barfing smilie!?!?! You know...I should start telling people that! Thanks Tkitty!
My kids were raised vegetarian. Two now eat meat occasionally. One is vegan. All HEALTHY. No doctor visits for anything other than well visits and broken bones. No ear infections. No terrible allergies, etc. I never get into these discussions with people because they just want to try to piss you off. They don't really care if you don't eat meat. If anyone starts something like that I say, "Gotta go" and I go.
i didn't think of this at first but i just remembered a discussion i had with my roomies boyfriend. he was saying that there was some girl who was raised vegetarian and now is trying to introduce meat to her diet but having a hard time. i heard him talking about this and poked my head out of my den and said 'huh, gary, do you find it interesting that people who have never eaten, say, kale, in their lives have no adverse reaction to it yet people who have never had meat do? i mean do you think this could be because we are designed to be herbivores, but we have conditioned ourselves to eat meat?' he basically went on about how we should restrict anything from kids... blah blah, but he is good to argue with... i think he'll come around ;) ;D
You can always fall back on my standard: "My choice of what I eat isn't about you." It's not like you're trying to force him to go veggie!
heh you guys make me laugh. I love this board...I think I argued with him for just a few minuets because it so tempting try to "open their minds..." i dunno....
Look, next time you should just say, "Well, one thing I feel is really important is that when the kids are very young, you start to teach them to urinate into their sippy cups and try it. Because, you know, there are populations that drink their urine and it has unquestionable health benefits. But if you don't start when you are young, for some reason adults just never get around to doing it."
And this suggestion is in no way intended to offend those people who do this for religious or health reasons.
hahahhahahahahahaha :D
