Runners of Vegweb!! It's Race Season!

Hi Everyone!

I thought there was a thread already for this--but I couldn't find one in my search--so I appologize if I missed it!

OK runners! I declare that race season and training has begun! Does anyone have any planed races yet? How is everyone's training going? What are your goals for this season? Tips? Advice? Leave it here!!!

My frst planned race is not until May 31 (although I am looking for an earlier one!) and I haven't decided whether I'll run the 10k or half marathon portion of the race yet. My training has been going really, really well lately too! I ran 9 miles yesterday and my unofficial time off of my stop watch was 1:19:21--but I had approx 3 mintues of stop time for lights and traffic, etc. so 1:16 would not be completely unrealistic--but again, it's just time off of my watch. I feel really encouraged by the numbers though and I am excited for my run tomorrow--I'm planning a 6.5 mi course. I have never run so much in a week before--the best thing I ever did was get off the treadmill and start eating up pavement!! I can't believe how much longer, faster, and farther I am running!! I got in 20 miles in 3 days--more then I would usually do in a week at the gym!

This is only my second season running and I don't have any IRL running buddies so there is a lot I still don't know about the sport, and since I have no one to compare myself too, I'm not sure where I am in my progress--I set goals and just try to meet them as best as I can. Last season I ran 3 races--1 10k, 2 5ks and I medaled in my last race (a 5k). This season I hope to do at least 4 races, one of which I want to be a half marathon--I hope to medal again, but certainly not in the half--that I just want to finish!

Tomorrow it is supposed to be warm (in the 50's) but raining--does anyone have any experience with rain running? Any advice or things I need to know??

I really hope this can be a supportive place for runners and anyone interested in running (beginning, coming back to it, elite-pro) to share experiences, goals, victories, failures, training, advice, gear reviews, articles, and anything to do with the sport!

Love that blacktop and be safe on the roads runners!

boo! There is 5" of new snow on the ground....running on the track today...

I found a 1/2 marathon training run next Sunday--I'm going to attempt to go out for it! I'm a little nervous..but hopefully I'll get over myself and DO IT!

What do you guys think? Is there an advantage or benefit to wearing what they consider "high tech" gear or are you just as good in regular stuff?

I think it is a psych out for others, and a confidence booster for yourself.

I concure! Unfortunately, I will be returing my "psych-out" gear...the pants, which are a "small" are already lose on me and I am 10 lbs above race weight, so I know they will be falling off of me by race day...but I think I'm going to exchange them for some others! I generally where the champion line Target sells--which I think is really nice! Well, I usually just get the generic, monotoned colours--but they have some fancy designs and what not, so I'll pick up some of those, and hopefully a running vest too!

**Brrrr* I had such a COLD run today!! I finally got back outside--it was about 20 degrees, sunny and really WINDY! It kinda sucked on the way home...but my times were still pretty decent even though I got really stiff...

The Hard 9 Times:

Half way 4.5 miles 35:37
10k mark 50:44
9 mile finish 1:14:18

I ended up being a full minute slower then the last time I ran the course--but at least I got out there today :) I was also breaking in my new shoes and it was so cold my ear buds kept popping out and I had to constantly fiddle with them--I bet that slowed me down some too--but mostly I was just a tired, fat butt out there today...gotta step it up!

I'm planning on running a 1/2 marthon training run this Sunday and I am pretty freaked out by it! I just really want to be able to finish it!

I've been so bad lately, mostly b/c it still hurts a little to go up stairs let alone run. I'm wondering if I misspoke before--I don't know if it's actually shin splints... it's on the back of my leg kind of at the bottom of my calf (like on the thin bottom part of the leg), though sometimes it starts hurting more on one side or the other. And my ankle is cracking A LOT. A few summers ago when I played tennis nearly every day I twisted my ankle quite a bit, and I think ti weakened that whole bottom part of my leg. Even doing a tiny bit of wii fit hurt yesterday  :'(

However, I have started to do lots of reclining leg stretches (a restorative yoga pose) with a strap to flex my foot as I do time, and it's making it feel pretty good. I've also been giving myself a lot of foot massages hoping that that will release some of the tension. I've also tried to be really cognizant of how I stand--I've noticed that I shift my weight to my right side a lot which I'm sure is causing some of the extra strain on that leg.

Anyway, I"m now worried I won't be able to run mid-March :( I feel that with the stretching I'm actually getting somewhere though.

Oh! Caroleena! That sounds painful!!! I hope the stretching is helpin, but yeah--it doesnt sound like your running season is off to a good start huh? I'm so sorry to hear that your shin/calf area is giving you so many problems!!

:'(

Hang in there--heal proper!!

caroleena- check out runnersworld.com I'm pretty sure they have some good articles on common running injuries & how to fix them. Might help you out.

So my big trail run was Sunday & it was carzy-fun. Even snowed during it! I felt like I was going to puke after the last hill so I definetly gave it my all. Still took me about 10 minutes longer than last year, but then they did change the course around a bit, so it may have been harder or longer. It totally got me phsyced up to get back in shape, so I'm really happy about that.

Monday I swam 1/2 mile. Tuesday I felt wiped out, so I took a rest day. Yesterday I did a bunch of core exersises & stationary biked 45 minutes. I plan on a short run either at the track or treadmill tonight, swim & wieghts tomorrow, then a 8 1/2 mile traing run on some trails with the club on Sat.  ;)b

Thanks. I think I've settled on just having a pain-in-the-ass calf, that's aggrevating other parts of my leg as I try to ease the pressure I have to put on it. Stretching continues to feel awesome.

Anyway, enough of that! I've been resting for ten days (except for walking around in less-than-ideal shoes for work) and I'm so anxious to get back and do SOMETHING! I think I'm ready to go back to the gym :) and just to be on the safe side, I'll bring my swimsuit so I can swim laps if I can't stand to bear weight on the leg. A little cross-training never hurt anyone. And also, then I can go in the hot tub afterwards  :D

Still not sure if St. Patrick's weekend is going to work, but if not there's a race (on a trail that's much kinder on legs than a street is) in late April. I just have to be nice to myself, I think. I"ve already accomplished so much mroe than I've ever been able to before!

You guys are all so inspiring!

Lisa!!! that's AWESOME!!! Trail runs are freaking hard--way harder than a road race! I gove you so many props for doing those! I think I want to try one--but I have to do some training first--I have a good place to run hilly trails on when it's warmer and not sloppy wet/muddy.

Are you going to do a tri-athalon this year? Didn't you do one last year? That's insane! I can't ever imagine being able to do that--you rock!!

Caroleena--awww! I'm sorry your calf is still bothering you--I really hope it feels better soon--I bet swimin will help a lot!!

I feel like my training has gotten derailed and Im getting so freaking fat...I can't stop eating and I'm not sleeping very well. Oi...hopefully when the weather turns better up here I will be motivated to go back to raw, lose these 10 freaking lbs and be a racing machine!

Love ya guys!!

I feel AWESOME! I just ran two miles and I feel great! I went a lot slower (12 minute mile), but I was comfortable and in the zone and most importantly, I could walk on my leg afterwards. I could have kept going but it was my first day back. Combined with walking I did 3 miles in about 40 minutes. I can totally do St. Patrick's day running if I stick to my 12 minute mile. (There will be lots of people who participate who will take longer than an hour, so 12 minute miles are still fine by me).

Shea--that's interesting; the week before my back was in a lot of pain, but I had just contributed it to girly sorts of stuff (although back pain isn't usually involved in it for me.) I've been sticking with the stretching and twisting and it's helped a ton.

That's great Caroleena!!! I'm glad you're feeling a lot better!

I'm bailing on my 1/2 marathon run tomorrow morning--it is going to be wicked cold, like 15 degrees and I just feel so fat and slow right now--I don't feel like being fat and slow around other people and struggling with a 13 mile run in the freaking deep freeze...but I do paln on going out for a 9 mile afernoon run when it's warmer so that will be fine too.

I went for a 6.5 mile run today and was significantly slower--I averaged 8:45 min/mi which is a good :15 slower per mile so that was pretty defeating, but I know what the problem is and I am taking steps to correct it and hopefully in the next couple of months I can push myself into 8 min/miles and give myself the oppurtunity to place in my races this season :)

Keep on keeping on runners!!! You can doooooo itttttttt! <3

UGH.  This week at work was extremely stressful and only went on one short run!  As a result I ended up choosing not to register for the marathon (at least missing the first deadline) because I still can't get into a training routine due to work.  I am thinking about trying to go in the morning before work, but struggle to wake up early enough.  Hopefully this week will be better.

Running Gait Analysis!!!

So....I finally went and had my gait and foot type analyzed.  I have a 'normal' arch type and log a minimum of 20miles/week.  My feet have supination instead of pronation (which like 95% of most other runners have).  Of course, even my feet feel the need to be different.  ::) My old shoes were pretty destroyed...both pairs to be exact as one pair starting causing foot pain.  All in all, I'm glad I went.  The store even has a wear 'em once or twice policy to get their feel and if you don't like them you can bring them back for refit and exchange!

What is Pronation?
Pronation refers to the inward roll of the foot during normal motion and occurs as the outer edge of the heel strikes the ground and the foot rolls inward and flattens out. A moderate amount of pronation is required for the foot to function properly, however damage and injury can occur during excessive pronation. When excessive pronation does occur the foot arch flattens out and stretches the muscles, tendons and ligaments underneath the foot.

What is Supination?
Supination is the opposite of pronation and refers to the outward roll of the foot during normal motion. A natural amount of supination occurs during the push-off phase of the running gait as the heel lifts off the ground and the forefoot and toes are used to propel the body forward. However, excessive supination (outward rolling) places a large strain on the muscles and tendons that stabilize the ankle, and can lead to the ankle rolling completely over, resulting in an ankle sprain or total ligament rupture.

OoOoOoOoOooooo that sucks Foofie! I feel you though--my routine has gotten way off track and I feel completely unprepared for  my May run right now. Stupid life being all stressful getting in the way of our running!!! Damn yoooooooou Universe!!!!! it's going to get better...it's just gotta!!! Hang in there!!!

Wow, guys - just been reading this thread so far and you're all such hardcore runners! I finally got out and ran today. I've been telling myself for ages that's pretty daft to assume that just because I eat well and I'm at a good weight that I can slack off exercising. Was really ill back in January and it's taken forever for the residual aches and pains to go away, but I was pretty perky this morning and there's a park about a five minute walk from my flat so I threw myself into a tracksuit and got out the door before I lost interest.

So... I didn't even manage a mile, which is laughable. I won't even tell you the time it took me to stagger round the park - let's just say there was an elderly couple out jogging with their dog who looked much more comfortable than I did!  :-D

Still, I kind of enjoyed it and will be back out there at the weekend to see if I can do better with all you in-shape, healthy people as inspiration :)

Oi...I hve been such a bad runner! My training has feel by  the wayside--I haven't done any serious running in ages it seems (or like 2 weeks) I need to get back out there!!

I did a half marathon (on my own made up route) for the first time in a while the other day.  I used to do them weekly or so during last year, but since the fall I haven't done a long run.  It was good, but the last three miles were a bitchhhhhh.  Such pain.  I finished though!  I found some nice hills on the way too.  I like hills.

Woot!!!!!!!! That is awesome KMK!!!! What was your time? I love hills too--well, I like going up them...not a fan of going back down *lol*

I have online exams ALL weekend--so I know I won't be able to go out at all for awhile *blerg* Oh well...I'll get back into the swing of things once I have a bunch of other non-running things taken care of :)

WOOHOO!  :D

I did it! Ran the 4-mile St. Patrick's day race that I had been "training" for. I ended up averaging a 12-minute mile, which I'm quite content with given that it was my first time ever doing ANYTHING like that, and the last few weeks have been plagued with painful calves and arches and being just overall burnt out. (And I'm really even not an athletic person). Of course it put me in like... 250th place in my age range  :P

DH did it too and averaged a 10-minute mile. First time for him as well.

My goal is to do a bunch more of these, and just get quicker!
