Runners of Vegweb!! It's Race Season!

Hi Everyone!

I thought there was a thread already for this--but I couldn't find one in my search--so I appologize if I missed it!

OK runners! I declare that race season and training has begun! Does anyone have any planed races yet? How is everyone's training going? What are your goals for this season? Tips? Advice? Leave it here!!!

My frst planned race is not until May 31 (although I am looking for an earlier one!) and I haven't decided whether I'll run the 10k or half marathon portion of the race yet. My training has been going really, really well lately too! I ran 9 miles yesterday and my unofficial time off of my stop watch was 1:19:21--but I had approx 3 mintues of stop time for lights and traffic, etc. so 1:16 would not be completely unrealistic--but again, it's just time off of my watch. I feel really encouraged by the numbers though and I am excited for my run tomorrow--I'm planning a 6.5 mi course. I have never run so much in a week before--the best thing I ever did was get off the treadmill and start eating up pavement!! I can't believe how much longer, faster, and farther I am running!! I got in 20 miles in 3 days--more then I would usually do in a week at the gym!

This is only my second season running and I don't have any IRL running buddies so there is a lot I still don't know about the sport, and since I have no one to compare myself too, I'm not sure where I am in my progress--I set goals and just try to meet them as best as I can. Last season I ran 3 races--1 10k, 2 5ks and I medaled in my last race (a 5k). This season I hope to do at least 4 races, one of which I want to be a half marathon--I hope to medal again, but certainly not in the half--that I just want to finish!

Tomorrow it is supposed to be warm (in the 50's) but raining--does anyone have any experience with rain running? Any advice or things I need to know??

I really hope this can be a supportive place for runners and anyone interested in running (beginning, coming back to it, elite-pro) to share experiences, goals, victories, failures, training, advice, gear reviews, articles, and anything to do with the sport!

Love that blacktop and be safe on the roads runners!

This year I am cautiously optimistic.  This is the first time in years when other sports training will not interfere with my running.  Training for hurdles/basketball/football doesn't help your distance running.  So far I am scheduled to run a marathon in Seattle in late June with my sister.  I really don't know if I'm going to be ready.  Training during the fall right up until the holidays I was up to about 10 miles and feeling good, but the damned holidays and getting busy at work interfered with my training.  Now I'm trying to get my diet and training synced up again.  I still think I can do this, but it's going to take a lot of work.

That's Great Foofie! I have mad respect for anyone who even thinks about going out for a marathon! June is still pretty far off--you have plenty of time to get in some great training--especially if, like you said, you don't have other training getting in the way!!

Wow! You were doing 10 miles a day before the holidays? That is freaking awesome! How many miles a week do you need to be doing for marathon training?

Good luck--keep checking in and updating your progress!!!!!! <3

arrrrrgh... dont' remind me! I am scheduled to be in my (first) 4-mile race in a little over a month--and my workload has exploded all over me and I have no time to work out! WAAAAH!  :'(

It's a really low-key run--to give you an idea there's a costume contest and a tandem contest along with medals :) But I really want to do... not-pathetically!

I so need to do nothing but running and yoga for a month in a row. Running to build up, and (gentle) yoga to stay stretched and not sore!

Are you going to run in a custome? I think that sounds like a lot of fun!

How do you think yoga affects your running? Do you think it is an important part of your training or just a nice addition? I really need to start doing yoga--I do a few poses as part of my stretches, but I have never taken a class...just never enough time in the day!

Well, my plans for a nice 6.5 mi run today is not going to happen--it is pretty stormy out there and is supposed to stay that wayall day! Guess I'll go cross train at the gym *sigh* I just got in the right mind set to be out of there now I'm heading back in....lame!

Nah, I'm not really a costume person (always hated Halloween b/c it's so much pressure!)--but since it's st. Patrick's day I'll be wearing green and stuff! It's just a big fun party (with some hardcore runners-- 4 miles in 20 minutes? eek!) I live in a pretty great St. Patricks day town :)

Right now, yoga is just a hypothetical, a "nice thing" I should be doing. In the past when I got on fitness kicks yoga and/or pilates was always a key part of it. I love how I feel when I'm doing yoga, even if it's only 2-3 times a week. Unfortunately yoga is offered at night on my late work nights, and I can never seem to get out of the house by 10AM on sundays  :-[ I've got a few DVDs I should start rotating, or (if I can figure out how to do it with my bootleg internet) there's some great resources online too. It just overall makes me more peaceful.

I just find that I get very stiff when I'm running and yoga would help keep me more flexible. Plus a big hurdle I have is getting my mind to SHUT UP, and yoga is very helpful for that--just finding peace in the repetition.

I"m off to the gym to run for the first time in almost 2 weeks. (Yikes!) I did 4 miles in 40-45 minutes on the elliptical earlier this week without a problem... now to switch over to the run. It's pretty gross out here but a treadmill will do.

Hey Capture!

There are some threads about loving running, but not specifically this! ;)b

You sound fast!!  At least to me!!  I think I'm more of a steady runner...but I hit 10miles with no problems...but that is at like 9.5min/mile.  I am trying to incorporate more speedwork though.  I'm registered for a half on March 1st.  It will definitely not be amazingly fast, but I'm just looking forward to completing it without wanting to die. :D

I tend to run on a treadmill mostly, but I do up the incline to mimic outdoor conditions...and trust me the room I'm in isn't air conditioned or anything.  I plan on starting with my 'short' runs outside to acclimate myself to the humidity here and then continue from there with upping the distance outside.  I have a beautiful beach to run next to as well! 8-) Can I use that as a valid excuse to get running sunglasses?? :agree?:

Oh!  Does anyone have experience with having their gait analyzed?  I need new shoes and am thinking about doing it since it is free at a local store.

Keep running!!  And sharing your stories here!

Yay Capture!!! You should totally do a half!!!! You are way faster than me, trust me!

I am planning on doing a half on earth day, with two friends of mine. Even though its not attached to a cause, we've gotten some people to sponser us and are planning on donating the proceeds to the Autism Society of Minnesota. I am going to make shirts with puzzle pieces on them for us that will say, "I am running because someone I love has autism."

Last year I saw a guy propose to his girlfriend at the finish line of the same race. He ripped off his shirt at the end and he had another shirt on underneath that said Marry Me! It was so cool.

LLG I have had my gait analyzed, because I was wearing out my shoes really badly on one side - like, to the point where they would start to pull away from the soles. My new shoes they recommended felt weird and clunky at first, but they have worn much better. Have not noticed any difference at all in speed/technique, but then, I'm pretty slow and sloppy to begin with.

Hey Everyone! Great imput and feed back!

Caroleena--I too get VERY stiff from running--since it is a repeatitive motion sport that happenes.I think yoga sounds like a really great addition to training--maybe we can find pictures of poses and try them out?

LLG--definitely do the sunglasses! It's a waaaay valid excuse! I would really like my gait analyzed too! If you do it, please report back and let us know what they do, how it went!! I'm curious to what and how they do it and what the results are!

PP--OMG! I loooove the "marry me" story--totally made me well up...so...you're coming up to A2 to run that half with me right? *lol* come on...it's only like an 8 hour drive!

Well I actually did get out on the road again today--I got lucky and got a break from the rain (mostly) but it was a really hard run for me. I started cramping in mile 4, my hip started clicking in mile 5, and it started to rain around mile 5 too...by the time I got home I was dreanched in sweat and rain and wanted to die--I was very sore. I made my 6.5 miles in 55 minutes...not too bad, but I really need to get my time down if I want to medal. I need to shave off at least 10 mintues from that time!!!! I think part of my problem today was that I only gave myself one day off after my 9 mile run, but it was so warm up here today and I really, really wanted to get out there--I am sooo addicted to the run and the high--and gosh darn it--that precious hour is my time! I get to strap on my shoes and and leave the world behind...why must our bodies resist what we want them to do??

wow I think this thread might be just what I need to get back into shape! Thanks for starting it.

I have a Trail race I'm signed up for next sunday. It's a little over 7 miles but it's in the mountains, so it's really hard. Here is the link for it if you want to check it out. The race director has a great sense of humor: http://pretzelcitysports.com/uglymudder.html I am not really ready at all. I ran 7 miles on Monday, but it was the furthest I've ran in a long time & I haven't been doing hills at all. Oh well, I'll just have to tough it out.

Caputure, you are a lot faster than I realized. If anyone wants to read up on running & different training schedules I recomend you check out runnersworld.com. They have a lot of great articles for beginners on there. Also, wanted to add I think yoga is a great compliment to running. I need to get more into the habit of it myself. I have a fantastic CD called yoga for athletes. It has seperate workouts for a bunch of different sports & then also submenus to select different body parts. If I start to get achy in my hips, back hamstrings, whatever, I just do  the running workout for that sore body part & it seems to fix me right up!

I'm planning on running today after work. Maybe writing my workouts in this thread will help keep me motivated.

I just rememebred that I wanted to remind every one to BE SAFE when they are running outside. I have been very scared by loose dogs, a friend of mine has had a pervert expose himself to her while she was running, another friend was hit by a car and died while he was out running & I have heard plenty of stories of women being attacked..... If you are going to be out running the streets (or trails) by yourself PLEASE carry pepper spray, ID & a cellphone. I know its akward & bulky, but one day you might need them. The ID is important in case something happens & you can't speak for yourself.

If I run bymyself it's only in very populated areas where there are lots of other people out walking & jogging, but I still always have a road ID as the very minimum. It's just a little plastic thing I clip onto my shoelaces & it has my name, address, home phone, husband's cell phone, my blood type & allergies on it. I got mine free at a race a while ago, but I've seen them in running stores too.

Yes! Great advice Lisa!! I always carry an id with me--I really should take my cell phone, but I don't have a good pocket for it...total "runners foul" on me for that...but I do run in heavily populated areas--all streets and sidewalks, lots of traffic, other runners, walkers around--still not an excuse for not taking my cell, but it's not like I'm runing at night down allys in "The D" A2 is pretty damn safe all things considered.

*Blerg* I am taking a rest day...I really, really want to go to the gym or for a run, but I know I have to rest and heal up--I am going to try and take tomorrow off too and then run 9 miles on Saturday. Yesterdays run was pretty brutal--I mean, I still LOVED it, but I was and still am tore the F* up from it.

Here are some articles on running and yoga--apparently they go hand and hand!

OOOhkay so here's my plan!

I lost some time, but I'm still good. My plan is to run at least every other day between now and the race day (3/14), with yoga inbetween. As I get closer I might up it to running every day once I hit March or so, but right now I need to up my yoga as well.

Capture, have you ever heard of Yoga Today? It's a free online source of yoga videos updated everyday! (That said, if you're new to yoga I definitely recommend going to classes--at least 1 to 2 per week--so that someone can comment on your form.) I'm really stiff today--my back is SO tight for some reason!--so I think I'm going to use one of their beginner series now.

Be careful you don't over run--you don't want to be hurt or sore when race day comes around!

I am actually going to check out a yoga class at my gym tonight..I'm a little nervous about going, but I'm going to be strong! I am definitely really, really stiff and I need to get stretched out!!

So I went to my first yoga class!

Actually, it was a mix of capoiera, drills and yoga--it was a lot more intense then I thought it was going to be--moostly because I didn't expect the capoiera! I am just not flexible enough to do the kicking...ah well...it was nice though and I am going to keep trying to go--my yogi is vegan and I met a lady who is vegetarian--she asked me a lot of questions about going vegan so that was really cool! My left hip feels pretty sore though :(

I have to try and not run again tomorrow--I really want to do a 10 mile run on Saturday and I know that if I go out tomorrow I won't be able to do the longer run. Ahhhh! I hate that I have to force myself to rest! I wish I had a better body, a stronger one that could handle harder trainning!! *blerg* oh well--gotta do what ya gotta do...

Capoeira?!  That is quite an intensive yoga class!  Just curious, have you found that yoga has helped your running?

Capture, I went the complete opposite way with my yoga today (though it doesn't sound like you were expecting the capoiera and drills... yikes!). I found the most beginner-ish yoga class I could find (despite the fact that I've been practicing yoga on and off for about 7 years) and just practiced centering my mind and stretching my body. It was especially necessary given how horribly sore my back was when I woke up this morning. But now I feel so much better.

I'm really interested to see how this plays into running. For me the mental aspect is the biggest part. Also, yoga's really big on teaching you to accept your body for what it is... something we can all learn from :)

Ah...yeah! I was not expecting it at all! My back and left hip are pretty sore today--I'm attempting another rest day and plan to go out for a 10 mile run tomorrow. I'm going to keep going to the class and see if it helps--Although it is much more intense then I expected, it is still largely stretching so it shouldn't hurt my running....I wouldn't think...

I seriously thought this was an intro class! It's the only yoga my gym offers and it's free so I really don't have any other options (I definitely do not have the $$$ to pay for an outside class). The yoda portion seemed reasonalble intro--although I was dissapointed that the yogi dd not walk around and help up with our poses--I was constantly looking up to try and see if I was doing it right--and I'm pretty sure I was doing several things wrong. The class had about 10 people show up with apparently is a lot more than the usual 4, so perhaps at the next class there will be fewer people and I will be able to get some one on one attention and help!

awesome thread! i actually have a 10K race tomorrow! i am definitely not ready for it though. this is the first season that i can train just for running, and not worry about swimming, so i started out training too hard, and i hurt my shins.  i had to take a week off from running, and this week i just got back into maybe 2-3 miles, very slowly, and still a bit painful i took 2 rest days before tomorrow, so im hoping to just go slow and see how it goes.

I did 6 miles outside today!  ;)b  I was actually quite impressed by myself.  I do remember one of the reasons I stopped running outside though.... the sun! :(  My skin absorbs color like you wouldn't believe and I have to be careful about 2 sunspots on my face that will show up if I get too much sun.  Note to self: keep 70SPF sunblock and a visor in my locker at work!!
