Has anyone else read this book? I just picked it up & am really excited! I think it might be what I've been searching for. Its a book on nutrition written by Brenden Brazier, who is a vegan and an ironman triathlete!!! I just had time to flip through & saw alot of great looking recipes. He emphasizes whole foods, lots of fruits & veggies & has quite a few raw recipes.
Hey Lisa! Guess what!?! I found a 10k walk/run coming up in 2 months in my hometown! I think I'm going to register for it! I can do 10k no problem at the gym--but I'm going to start training for outside conditions since I know it's a lot rougher--see if I can get a good time--I'm not interested in coming in the top rank--but in the top half would be nice :)
Any tips for training?
that's so fun! You should definetly register!!!
I actually find running inside on the treadmill harder than running outside because the treadmill is so boring & the gym is so stuffy. The elliptical is a really good workout, but it is different than running. I'd reccommend you start running outside or on the treadmill 2-3 days a week. Besides your knees, your other joints, ligiments & tendons need to strengthen up. What is wrong with your knees? Did you have surgery or past injury, or did you just notice that when you run they get achy?
This plan looks perfect:

Thanks for the link! I will defintely use it :) My knees got all tore up from marching band in HS (which sounds really lame--but we were competitive and used the "roll march" instead of "high step" and it just killed them) i never had surgery (thank god) they are just super achey--if I go on the stationary bike I will be in agony within 10 minutes--but running on the treadmill is not too bad. I'm going to start the treadmill this week I think--I'm kind of scared and excited all at the same time. I have such a bad failure complex that I'm worried I am going to make an ass out of myself--I just gotta push past the discomfort and DO IT!!! Thanks for your help Lisa :)
OK--quick question--what is "cross" I know I should probably know--but I don't! :/
crosstraining, some cardio other than running, like the elliptical
Try not to worry! go at a slow pace, one that you would be ok with talking to someone while you are running & if you start getting tired, walk for a nimute or two & then try running again.
One mistake a lot of new runners make is "overstride" this means taking real big bouncy steps. try not to do that because it will stress your knees more & tire you out quicker. Think of moving your feet more in a "shuffle" You don't need to pick up your feet real high.
If your knees do start to hurt, you should go to a specialty running store & have them watch you run & they may be able to reccomend shoes for you that could help.
thanks lisa :) tht makes a lot of sense--I'll keep you updated to my progress :)
I decided to follow my own advice & just went over to my favorite store for new sneaks, realizing that mine are old & that's probably why my hip has been bothering me. ::) duh I should know that by now!
Oh, I so need new sneakers..... :-\
I'm going running now! It's 60 out! A nice long run, me and my ipod. I'm excited.
Keep it up, Capture!
Also, can I read your blog too, Lisa?
of course! its not very exciting right now though.
