Has anyone else read this book? I just picked it up & am really excited! I think it might be what I've been searching for. Its a book on nutrition written by Brenden Brazier, who is a vegan and an ironman triathlete!!! I just had time to flip through & saw alot of great looking recipes. He emphasizes whole foods, lots of fruits & veggies & has quite a few raw recipes.
Ooooo this looks really interesting! I like the fact he is an vegan ironman triathlete! Competing in ironman triathalons is a goal in my life and I'm finally getting time to seriously train. I'll have to pick this up or order it once I get back to school.
Oh! Sounds really interesting! I think I'll check it out--I just got back into the gym and I could use some help with my nutrition--not that I eat bad, just not a well as I should (as I type I'm munching on a chocolate, PB, oatmeal + flax cookie...). I know I should go raw--but dang, I really like my food heated up! Of course I bitched for months that I would never be able to give up dairy, and I seem to be doing just fine with that--so maybe one day raw is in my future :)
Haven't read it. He's the same vegan triathlete that makes Vega, though. I like Vega. http://www.myvega.com/products/
It looks like I have another book on my to read list!
I've considered it, as it sounds like a good program for overall health and stamina. I'm currently using his Vega powder as a meal replacement, or supplement to help jump start a weight loss effort I just tried. It's very good at controlling my appetite for a few hours. I like it because it's not soy (I eat enough soy) and it's vegan.
Good luck!
He's pretty inspiring, isn't he?! You can find out more about him and his diet here:

On the raw food note: If you start incorporating more raw fruits and veggies into your diet you may be surprised at how much better you'll start feeling in numerous ways. I had thought eating vegan was the ultimate way to eat healthy until I got curious and started doing more raw and am amazed how wonderful and even better it makes me feel! More energy, overall lighter feeling, more mental clarity, don't need as much sleep, happier attitude to name a few. I don't eat 100% either. I've read that's even more profound. But, like any healthy way of eating, it requires lots of initial research on what exact nutrients you need to be healthy and what sources you can derive those nutrtients from! :)
A couple of raw vegan food sites that are popular and with forums for questions:

www.giveittomeraw.com <-- crazy name, eh?! :D
that's really cool. now that i am into biking, and i have been into running, all i need to do id get into swimming and i could be a vegan ironman, too!

Go for it H! You'd do awesome!
So far alot of what I read in his book makes alot of sense. I'm really enjoying it and trying to incorporate alot of his ideas into my diet. I'm planning on drinking vega with ricemilk every morning, reducing the processed foods I eat and trying a lot of his recipes.
The zucchini chips did not work out so good, they stuck to the pan too much, but it may have been the crappy pan I used. I'm going to try them again tonight. I also made a batch of his energy bars. They are similar to luna bars but higher in protien because they have quinoa and hemp powder. They were easy to make & pretty tasty too. I have been feeling more energetic, but I'm also on some crazy non drowsy cold medicine so not sure if thats the reason! I'll start talking about the book & my diet more in my blog. If anyone wants to read it just let me know.

what's the URL?
It's here on VegWeb. I just started it. I made it so that only my "buddies" can read it because I felt kindof weird having a blog on the internet that just anyone could read (esp. because in the future I might end up venting about relatives on there!), but I just added all of you guys to my buddy list: foofie, healthy momma, tweety, firefightress, hespedal
Thanks for adding me Lisa. I know what you mean. I have a blog at allnurses.com and I found out from my sister last year that my mother was reading it, so I have to watch what I say. If I really want to rant, though they have a private entry function that I can use, but then no one can read it.
Hey Lisa!!! What edition of the Thrive do you have? I looked it up at amazon and there were 3 different books--which one should I get???
I have this one: http://www.amazon.com/Thrive-Diet-Weight-Reduce-Healthy/dp/1600940609/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1206802870&sr=8-1
I think it was released in Canada before the US so maybe the other hard cover is the Canada version. Nice to read all the good reviews!

Thanks Lisa! I'm going to order it when I have some extra $$$ I don't need! I think my diet is pretty rockin right now--but the more I work out the more I know I am going to want an "athlete's diet"--maybe I should start training for something...give myself a goal besides weight loss...I wish I could be one of those buff ladies that runs marathons--but i have the lung capacity of a 2 year old...damn you Camel turkish golds!
Capture, I'm sure your lung capacity will get there! it just takes training.
So I found two recipes in the thrive book that did NOT work for me!
Zucchini Chips. Supposedly just thinly slice zucchini & grease a baking pan with coconut oil & bake at 300 for 30 minutes. The first time I tried they stuck horribly & the thin ones tased good, but the thick ones stayed wet & didn't crisp up.
Vegtable crackers. Basically you process some veggies like carrots & celery with some nuts & seeds & flax seeds & then spread it on a greased pan & bake at 300 for 30 minutes. I couldn't get it to process because it was too dry so I added some water & the batter was really sticky & I just got mad & threw it all out.
I think I'll stick with the raw recipes.
Also, I found myself very foggy headed & out of energy yesterday so I cheated & had a big pasta dinner & felt a lot better. I think I wasn't eating enough.
Thanks for the tips Lisa! So I was checking out some state marathons and I found one coming up at the end of April that I want to do so bad--but I have no way to get there :( itsounds so amazing though--it is a trail marathon and the course is 13.1 miles long and if you run the full you do it twice--I thought it would be great to do the half--what a great first marathon that would be for me! But like i said, my transportation is not good and it is so soon, i don't think I would be able to arrange anything. It sucks that I found it and have no way to actually do it--why God why!?!?!
Anywho--more tips! And don't worry about that pasta dinner--you can just call it carbo loading!
Capture, do you run regularly? If not, you should look for a race a little further in advance (like +3 months) and gradually work up to the distance. There are lots of training plans out there that you can follow. or else try a 5K first. where are you located?
Add me too, please. I'd like to read your thoughts on the diet. I think I'll start a blog too to put my comments on following the McKenna techniques for overcoming overeating due to emotional reasons instead of posting them to a thread here.
It sounds like a VitaMix and dehydrator would be good for this book. Too bad I don't have either.

Well, I won't be able to do the trail marathon anyways so it's not a big deal. I'm not a great runner--but I am building up my endurance and speed on the elipitcal--I know it's different, but it's low impact on my knees which are seriously screwed--I think there are some summer 5K's around here, I'll have to look them up--I think I'm going to start run training after this semester ends and see how I do--I really hate the treadmill--but I gotta do it!!!
