Good news thread--post it here!

Heli's happy headhunt post (is headhunting vegan?)  ;D made me aware of so many good things this week.
--Two of my students were afraid they wouldn't be able to study what/where they wanted because of their entrance exam results. BOTH get to study here in town, and do what they wanted. One future doctor, one future architect. Both young women of talent.

--Another student aced her English exams so she will finish her degree before the fall term starts. Whee!!

--And I am seeing light at the end of the weight-loss tunnel. Even if he did take away my cheese, at least temporarily!

Am dying to share some good news with you all but have been sworn to secrecy for now...need a biting lip emoticon  ???

Any thing to do with a baby? (C'mon, guys, let's see if we can winkle it out of her!!)  ;D

(Query: Why do people who are preggy like to keep it a secret? I mean, eventually everybody's gonna know. A lot sooner than most new mummies think.)

I'm NOT pregnant. Not that there was ever a question, but given my current financial/real estate situation that IS good news.

But my real "I don't know if I can share it" good news that is now all over the place...

... I'm gonna be an aunt for the first time :)

Hehee...

And yeah, if it was actually me I would have been all over the place with it, but since it's a matter of respecting someone else's wishes... that's when it became a taboo  :-X until BIL went telling EVERYONE...

"Came out" as a vegetarian to my ex-husband! I was a bit apprehensive about this as I was worried that he would give me a hard time about feeding our little boy a vegetarian diet at home.  :-\ The great thing was that he was ok with it!  :)

Yay!

I almost got killed but it's good news I didn't!

We were driving in Kentucky and the Ike winds have hit here. Trees all over the road. So we get out of the car to clear some branches to get through. We moved a few trees and were walking back to our car to drive through. Right behind us a  huge tree fell and re-blocked the area we just cleared. If our timing was a little bit different that tree would have fallen on us or the car as we drove past.

Good news!

YIKES!  I'd say that's probably the best news posted yet.  I live in the woods and there's nothing more terrifying than hearing that awful crack/bang/echo sound of a tree falling.

Good news is the best news! Glad you're ok, PK.

1) I got into a class (International Relations), after running around frantically trying to add it to my schedule, when I thought I wouldn't get in. Whoop.
2) A group I'm a part of at school (the Women's Issues Network) is making a cookbook to sell as a fundraiser. I'm designing it and spearheading the project - and everything's going to be vegetarian! (Not vegan, but that's alright with me.)

WOW, yeah...I'm glad we didn't lose you, PK. ...I don't think we've ever had a chat together, but I see that you're a rather positive presence around these parts, and it's awesome that you're alive!

1) schedule rearrangement is such a pain...what a relief it is when you finally have it worked out!
2) Um, SWEEET! Just outta curiosity, what program(s) do you plan to use to design it? What kind of color/mood/theme will it employ? (if you need any good fonts, let me know...)

The best news EVER!
We got power back on! Yay! Even though most people are still power-less.

High five for good luck! Now I can waste time on VW again.

I had a super productive day! Got up relatively early, made some kickass coffee that pretty much got me through the day, and then did 6 loads of laundry, cleaned the entire kitchen, started some crockpot chili, ran to the store for laundry supplies in the middle of loads, separated and put away said laundry, convinced a woman at the store to use hominy in chili, baked banana bread, and now i'm relaxing.

OH!! And i logged into my wamu accounts today, and lo and behold I was approved for a new credit card! With a decently high limit!! And apparently w/ this new CC, I get my FICO score free anytime. My score has gone up over 100 points in less than 2 weeks because I paid off all my bills. Yesssss!!

My sister is adopting a kitten that her co-worker found abandoned on the side of the road.  So happy that she is giving the kitten a good home and that she will have a furry friend!  :)>>>

That's groovy, Pink!
I too just had a beautifully busy/productive day...and what's great about that is that it's come about after a two-week period of semi-depression (that is, nothing like other "episodes", but no getting out of bed/cleaning house/WORKING for me..), which was forcefully broken by my new construction job!

I love a good day of working out via daily activities/vocation.... I've been following more of a schedule, and while I'm getting almost no sleep, it's rockin.' Don't worry, though, my body responds and crashes when it needs to, and I can accommodate it. I prepare breakfast at night, put it in the fridge for the next morning (along with a pre-packed lunch for work), and wake up to a bit of light yoga/stretching, yaddayada....Then work for 8 or 10 hours, briskly walk a .68 miles(ish)  from the bus stop to my apartment, and get to work on dinner or preparing tomorrow's lunch.
Today I finished a big batch of compost broth that had been steeping overnight, then I went to work on baking some healthy cookie/energy bars for additional snacks at work, and ALSO to share with my super-cool new boss.
I'm really, REALLY proud of how they turned out, because I completely, 100% IMPROVISED the recipe as I went along. As a result, I had too much sugar/fruit goo in relation to dry stuff/oats and oil, so they nearly burnt in the short time they were in the oven. Luckily, I got them out at the point where they're pretty hard round the edges and stuck madly to the pan, but can be scraped from the top to have a smaller but not overcooked cookie.

so now I'm getting ready to design a logo for a newish photography company (a PAID, freelance design gig) as well as sketch out some ideas for promo items for the band "Wade in the Rhythm."

Check those guys out on myspace--their music is incredible. I'm designing stuff for them (also a paid gig), but I'm really happy to do it because I'm just supporting a new favorite music group. This is so exciting!

Because I have no money, I downloaded a free desktop publishing program called PagePlus SE. It's pretty good - has everything I need and more (because I don't need much). The cookbook's going to be really straightforward - nothing fancy. I haven't come up with colour themes yet, and actually, I don't think there will be a colour theme... we don't have much of a budget, and I think it might be in black and white (I'm not sure about this though).

We're trying to get students to send in their favourite recipes - asking for easy, student-friendly, low-cost meals and treats. So far, only one person has submitted anything, but I'm not worried. Even if I don't receive any more, I've got plenty of back up recipes, just waiting.

As opposed to a fake vegan? Nah, you were always legit.  ;)

Oooh, okay. It's great that you're opening it up to other students, that's a great opportunity for people to explore their talents and get recognized!

What I'd recommend is making a nice, bold b&w design for a front cover that you could easily print onto colored paper. You can go to a Copyworks (or other such printing service) and get them to print your design onto semi-heavy colored paper for only a few cents more than white paper...which could go into the front cover of a cheap plastic binder like one of these:

http://www.martellssolutions.co.uk/ProductImages/131700.jpg
...in which the inside pages can be regular paper with paper-punched holes.

OR, you could print that design onto slightly better quality stock/tagboard, punch a few holes in it (as well as the inside pages), and bind it with two or three binder rings, like this:

http://www.lanyardfactory.com/lanyards/making/hardware/binder/im/loose-leaf-binder-rings-15.jpg + http://66.49.227.200/FCG/Images/Photos/Projects/UPN/tn_P1010601.JPG

could I maybe see what design you go with, when it comes about?

...perhaps I should have sent you a PM instead of dished this super-secret method out to the public. oughta be charging y'all for my services, as I am now a freelance designer. booya.

This thread makes me happy too!

Four good news for me. First, there's a new chapter of Food Not Bombs in my city and I will be participating. Second, it's my birthday and I'll jive if I want to and third, I am going to Montreal for the weekend.

And last but not least, I made a very much kickass vegan moussaka (from V'Con). I love it when I achieve something great in the kitchen.
