Vegan WIN

So. My omnivorous husband is a construction worker/builder's apprentice. And the other day he said him and some of the 'guys' got talking about food, he let slip his wife is vegan, cue: "so what, that's like, just salad and shit?" at which point he gears up and explains the huge variety of hearty, delicious, varied, tasty and filling food I make, and points out we barely ever even have lettuce in the house, and that we eat a lot more interesting food than any of them.
I call that a vegan win.
Share yours....
haha, happy to help! : )
:)>>> the last one oww!! i am cracking up!
oww those are amazing. I was looking at them with my bf sitting next to me and showed him the photos and he said, "that's like what we do on vacations, but with plants and rocks instead of statues." well, he's sorta right, but we don't have that many. Here's one, taken at La Ciudad Encantada, in Cuenca, Spain

And another one from Spain

My win. I'm a member of a bookclub that meets in various restraunts on both sides of Tampa Bay monthly. I rarely have an issue with the menu, once I did and I just sat it out that month because it was in a seafood place with zero vegan options. This month we're combining with another bookclub and meeting in a fancier place and having a three course meal to celebrate the holidays. Again, no vegan options. I posted on the message board asking if we had to participate in the courses, or could we order something else, because otherwise rather than be a freak I'll pass since I'm a vegan vegetarian.
My answer after about a week: "the chef will be able to do a pan seared tofu with risotto and roasted vegetables for you. Would that be satisfactory?"
Hell yeah that's satisfactory. w00t!
yay!!
Sounds yummy! That's much better than french fires, salad with no dressing or steamed broccoli!
yeah, I think my boy's pretty damn cute :)

German fires are actually way better than the French ones. They burned down a lot of stuff.
Yeah Tweety for awesome-satisfactory!
My semi-win:
I made brunch for 5 omnis and 1 vegetarian yesterday. They were floored by the food. Quiche, 2 salads, potatoes, challah, cinnamon rolls, pancakes... One said, normally I'd pay for brunch and get something way worse than this. One couldn't stop eating the quiche. They ate so much and it made me very happy. Someone asked if it's more expensive to be vegan and a girl said yeah, especially getting substitutes for baking, and I was like no, the vegan margarine here is like 70 cents. And I don't use eggs, so... not at all. Next time I feed them I'll show them a video or something about why to go vegan afterward. Then I'll get them to go vegan and get a full win.

Woops! Haha, Germany is always better anyway!
Holy crap, 70 cents? Lucky! I would've gotten a little peeved if that girl would have answered for me without knowing anything about veganism. Anyway, I love your plan for the next brunch!
oooh okay, win then. next time- double win.
and yes, food is cheap here. but seriously, alsan margarine does not even come close to the awesomeness that is earth balance. cookies just aren't the same. and it's not the tastiest spread.
my awesomeness of the week:
my husband and his mates have their own forum set up by one of them who is a super computer guy. One of them lives in California and was visiting here a few weeks back. He just posted this :
"Going Vegan:
Ironically this is actually influenced by my recent trip to NZ and talking to mr oww (the meat man). Not just that however. I've read a bunch of stuff over the last year or so about vegan or paleo diets and stuff. And I started reading the China Study (on mr oww's recommendation). So the goal is to try it for at least one month and see how I feel! I'm not actually worried about being 100% Vegan, if I incidentally eat small amounts of dairy or meat (e.g. a soup has some chicken stock in it) I won't be worried about it. I just want to avoid eating meat or dairy directly.
Since I've got a few weeks before I want to start this, I'm going to try get together some resources, like recipes and stuff of what I can eat, what I'll need to buy etc. There are a couple of Vegan dudes at work so I'll probably talk to them and of course I'll have to ask oww (and mr oww too as the consumer of her creations) for some good recipes to try.
I also need to figure out what supplements (if any) I'll need to take. A quick look in the China Study seems to recommend a b12 and maybe a vitamin D supplement."
how awesome is that?? He's just wanting to try a month as a kind of new years resolution type of thing, and to see how much/if he feels any better/different, but he's the kind of person that if he thinks it feels better, is likely to stick with it, so yeah, I'm pretty excited! : )
That's totally awesome! Go you!
yay oww <3 that is sooooo awesome!!!
woop woop!
The teachers at my daughter's school are mostly volunteers. Today they had a teacher appreciation luncheon for about 20 people. They were serving beef stew (gag) and had a chocolate fondue pot for dipping junk in. I brought about a large stockpot on Veganrun's Southwest Tortilla Soup, and someone else brought a small pot of stuffed pepper soup. Anyway, at first people were afraid to try the "vegetarian" (you have to hear the way they say the word like it is a warning) soup. After someone got brave and tried it, all of it disappeared. There were leftovers of the beef stew and the stuffed pepper soup, but I got a ton of recipe requests. I also put out a silken chocolate peanut butter pie which mysteriously disappeared. The had a ton of fondue and other desserts left. It was fun to see people surprised that vegan food can actually taste good. I guess they think I just chew on sticks or something. These are people who don't really know what a vegeterian is and have probably never intentially sat down to a vegan meal.
a coworker gave me $60 to make him 4 vegan lunches and 2 vegan dinners... He's loved his 2 lunches so far... maybe i can get a little work business going since everyone always wants to eat my food LOL
lbarte- awesome
amy- freakin sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet
I was at the local health food store with my BFF, who thinks being vegan is taking vegetarianism too far, but whatever. I noticed there were some free samples but didn't stop, a customer that was trying it told me that I should try it to. Being somewhat shy I asked if she knew if it was vegan.
She replied, "Vegetarian?! Well sure, there's no meat in that! Just some vegetables and some goat cheese."
I nodded my head and looked around for an escape. Meanwhile, my friend goes "she's a vegan. She doesn't eat meat, eggs, dairy, or anything else that comes from an animal."
The lady seemed shocked, "it's just some goat cheese! It barely counts."
I was starting to laugh nervously, but my friend cut in "it still comes from an animal."
The woman left, and I was grateful for my friend standing up for me. She may not agree with my lifestyle, but she'll defend my right to be vegan.
After we explained what happened to my mom (who also doesn't agree with veganism) she was like "shouldn't people that shop at the healthful store know what a vegan is? Besides, she's hardly in a position to judge what you eat."
When my BFF bought me beauty products for Christmas she made sure they were animal product free and not tested on animals. Thanks sweetheart!
